Literacy in Reception

What is phonics? f-r-o-g has 4 sounds Phonics is the connection between a letter and the sound it makes. We teach Phonics to help children recognise the individual sounds in words so that they can ‘build’ a word. This then helps them to read/identify a word. 1- recognise the sounds 2-’blend’ the sound together 3-read the word! eg: c- a-t has 3 sounds f-r-o-g has 4 sounds

First steps to phonics Phoneme – a single unit of sound Set 1: s a t p i n Set 2: m d g o c k ck Set 3: e u r h b Set 4: f ff l ll ss Set 5: j v w x y z zz

We then move on to these sounds qu ch sh th ng er ai ee igh oa oo ar or ur ow oi ear air

Next steps….

Learning through actions, pictures, stories and sounds.

Reading Hear your child read everyday, make a comment at least once a week and initial the reading diary daily. Encourage your child to use their phonic knowledge. Split the word up into small chunks ch ur ch. Use the pictures for support. Some words cannot be sounded out. We call these tricky words. These are words that just need to be learnt.

Writing ‘Have a go’ opportunities. (shopping lists, writing letters, labelling pictures) Emergent writing - sounding out words - first letter, final letter, middle letter. Correct spelling for high frequency words. Sentences with capital letters and full stops.
