1 Phonics Workshop Thursday 12th October 2017

2 What is phonics? Children have a 20 minute daily discrete phonics sessions. Children are taught to read by breaking down words into separate sounds or ‘phonemes’. They are then taught how to blend these sounds together to read the whole word. There are 44 different sounds.

8 Phase One Distinguising between sounds Hearing initial sounds in words
Phase 1; usually before starting school and beginning of FS2 awareness of rhyme, alliteration, speaking clearly and enjoying sharing stories. Distinguising between sounds Hearing initial sounds in words Matching sounds to words Sorting objects which have the same/different sounds Segmenting words aurally Blending words aurally Alliteration games Rhyming strings Listening ears, binoculars, instruments, rhyming soup, feely bags, robot arms, matching games

Phase 2; During FS2 (Reception) awareness of a small number of grapheme/phoneme correspondences and using these to blend and segment. Teach individual letter sounds (phonemes) and written representation (graphemes) Matching written letters to sounds Continuing rhyming words. Learning letter formation Segment CVC words to write Blend CVC words to read. Teach tricky words that cannot be sounded out. 13 Phase 3 Phase 3; During FS2To teach children one grapheme for each of the 44 phonemes in order to read and spell simple regular words. Teach digraphs/trigraphs Teach letter names Teach tricky words and read and write High Frequency Words from Memory Writing sentences with capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. 16 Becoming more practised in making correct spelling choices
Phase 4; During FS2 To teach children to read and spell words containing adjacent consonants. Phase 5; During Year 1. Teaching children to recognise and use alternative ways of pronouncing the graphemes and spelling the phonemes already taught. Phase 6; During Year 2. Becoming more practised in making correct spelling choices moving from learning to read to reading to learn.
