10 Games when reading You can read the sentence to your child and ask them to find certain words e.g. all the words that start with a ‘c’ sound. Focus on a tricky word for example ‘the’ can your child point to that word each time they see it when reading? You can sound out the letters of a word and see if your child can blend the sounds together to say the word.

11 Questioning It is important to ask a range of literal, inferential and evaluative questions. Literal (questions that require the reader to discuss what they have read) – how many sisters does Cinderella have? What was the pumpkin changed into? Inferential (questions that require the reader to search for clues and infer their meaning) – What caused Cinderella to lose her slipper? Why do you think the ugly sisters were nicer to Cinderella when they knew the slipper fitted perfectly? Evaluative (questions that require the reader to draw on personal knowledge) – If you were Cinderella, would you have forgiven the sisters?

12 Any Questions?
