2 What you can do? Talk to them! Model and expect good listening.
Speaking and listening are the key skills children need to develop their ability to read and write. What you can do? Talk to them! Model and expect good listening. Encourage the understanding and use of new vocabulary. Sing songs, rhymes and read poems, enjoying the rhyme and rhythm of words. Read to your child regularly and develop their story language (library books given each Friday)

3 Letters and Sounds Structured programme
Six phases – Phase 1 – rhyme and alliteration taught in Nursery Phase 2 and 3 taught in Reception Children will be streamed after half term Fast pace, lots of consolidation KEY SKILLS: Blending for reading Segmenting for writing Tricky words

4 A New Vocabulary Phonics – the learning of letters and sounds
Phoneme – the sound a letter makes Grapheme – the written letter Segmenting – breaking a word up into its component sounds Blending – running sounds together to make a word Tricky words – words that cannot be decoded using phonics cvc – c = consonant v = vowel Digraph - a sound made with two letters eg. sh ai oi Phonetically plausible – written phonetically that it can still be read although it is spelt incorrectly eg. torl werk cabij

5 Phase 1 All about sounds - musical, environmental, voice etc
Aural discrimination of sounds, including letter sounds Blending and segmenting orally

6 Phase 2 - Reception Learning specific letters and sounds – s, a, t, p, i, n, c, k,e… Reading tricky words: I go no to the Blending and segmenting vc and cvc words and in captions and sentences

9 Jolly Phonics Letter Sounds (British English)

10 Reading at School In addition to a weekly library book, a levelled reading book will be given. Teacher and TA read 1:1 with each child in a group. All children will have read 1:1 with both adults by the end of the week. PLEASE ensure your child’s book is brought in EVERYDAY.

11 Reading at home Quiet place for reading
Inside cover of books have helpful tips and comprehension questions. Words are everywhere – look out for them with your child Follow your child’s lead – let them teach you their new sounds Password game Enjoyable shared experience! PLEASE sign the reading record so that we know you have read with your child. Books will not be changed if not signed in the record book. Feel free to add your own comments about their reading progress at home. Reading at home – Male role model.

12 Writing at school Mark making opportunities
Explicit teaching of letter formation Physical development for writing through fine motor activities. Weekly guided writing sessions linked to our key text. Segmenting for writing. Learning to write Tricky words by heart. Encouraging independence – having a go!

13 Writing at Home Reinforce correct letter formation
Encourage correct tripod pencil grip – mummy, daddy and baby example! Let them see you writing Do not spell everything out for them Encourage independence – Bear’s diary

Week of 12th November Daily Phonics Sessions for Parents Letter will be sent out
