What is sustainable living? Sustainable living is the practice of reducing your demand on natural resources by making sure that you replace what you use to the best of your ability. Sometimes, that can mean choosing not to consume a product that is made using practices that do not promote sustainability; and sometimes, it means changing how you do things so that you start becoming more of an active part of the cycle of life.

We all know that climate change, global warming, depletion of ozone layer and resource depletion are real and their impact on human and animal lives can be devastating. It is an opportunity for people to adopt actions for sustainable living that can help them to reduce their carbon footprint or environmental impact by altering their lifestyle. Simple measures like using public transportation more often, reducing energy consumption and becoming more eco-friendly can go a long way in reducing your environmental impact and making this planet a clean and safe place.

Let’s watch a video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VC3C_8eQgeE

How can we save electricity and water ? Everyone plays a part! Turn off all the electrical appliances when you are not using them. Set an alarm for 5 minutes when showering as a reminder to save water. Collect rain water (with a water butt) and use it to wash your car.

How do we prevent water leakage? If you see any water pipes that are leaking, call a plumber to repair them or else water will be wasted! Also, if you see the air conditioner leaking, you must get it repaired.

How can we encourage others to save water? Run only full loads in the washing machine and dishwasher. That can save 300 to 800 gallons per month. Install water-saving shower heads and low-flow faucet aerators . When washing dishes by hand, do not leave the tap running while cleaning them.

How can we encourage others to save electricity? We can put quotations next to switches to remind our family members to turn off the electrical appliances at home. Remind our family members to turn off the water heater when it is not in use. Encourage family members to use LED lights instead of normal light bulbs as LED lights can save electricity.

Given $500 We would change all lights using incandescent bulbs in a 5 Room HDB flat to LED lights Living Room 2x 100 W 2x24W = $55x2=$110 Bedrooms 3x 75W 3x 18W =$50x3=$150 Toilets 2 x60W 2x12W =$40x2=$80 Kitchen Storeroom 1x60W 1x12W =$40 Walkway Total=$500

Monetary Savings from changing all lights to LED lamps Incandescent Bulbs LED lights 785 W 174W Electricity Bill about $60 per month Electricity Bill about $13.33 per month Cost savings =$46.67 per month Cost Savings =$560.04 per year

How much we can save? We can save about $100 a year if we turn off all electrical appliances when not in use. We can cut the usual water bill by half if we shower for less than 5 minutes. We can use rain water to wash our car instead of going to the car wash so that we can save money.
