The IB Diploma Programme We offer both the Full IB Diploma Programme of studies, as well as individual IB Diploma Courses Every course is completed over a two year period beginning in grade 11 (so, over both grades 11 and 12)

IB – The Full Diploma Programme

Diploma Programme Assessment The final awarding of the IB Diploma is based on the combined total marks (on a scale of 1 to 7) for each of the six courses, plus 3 additional points awarded based on the completion of the Extended Essay (EE), Creativity, Action & Service (CAS) hours, and the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course Marks of 5 or above in individual HL courses are generally eligible for post-secondary credit A score of 24 is necessary to receive the Diploma, although this is only awarded if the core components are completed to a satisfactory level

Diploma Programme Courses Students in the Diploma Programme have choices of courses from six areas They must choose one course in each of Groups 1 to 5; their sixth course can come from Group 6 or an additional course from Groups 2 to 4 Students take three HL (higher level) courses and three SL (standard level) courses

Diploma Programme Offerings Group 1: Studies in language and literature English (HL) Group 2: Language acquisition French B (SL) Spanish ab initio (SL) Japanese ab initio (SL) Group 3: Individuals and societies 20th Century European History (HL) Psychology (HL) Group 4: Experimental sciences Biology (HL) Physics (SL) Chemistry (HL/SL) Sports, Exercise & Health Science (SL) Group 5: Mathematics Mathematics (SL) Group 6: The arts Music (SL) Visual Arts (HL/SL)

Core Components of the Diploma Programme In addition to their six Diploma Programme courses, full Diploma Programme students must also complete: A Theory of Knowledge course (TOK) – taught over two years Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) – minimum 150 hours An Extended Essay (EE) research paper on a topic of their choice **All three components must be completed in addition to the six courses of study in order to receive an IB Diploma

Full Diploma Course Selections Courses offered at the Higher Level (HL) are as follows: English: Literature History of Europe and the Middle East Psychology Biology Chemistry Visual Arts These courses comprise up to 240 hours of instruction over the course of two years

Full Diploma Course Selections Courses offered at the Standard Level (SL) are as follows: French B (must have French 8,9, 10 to enrol) Spanish ab initio (beginner’s – less than two year’s experience) Japanese ab initio (beginner’s – less than two year’s experience) Chemistry Physics Sports Exercise and Health Sciences Math Music **these courses must meet at least 150 hours of instruction over two years, but in reality receive close to 200 hours.

IB Diploma Courses (formerly certificate) Students undertake Diploma Courses for post-secondary credit or for advanced preparation in post secondary areas Usually these are completed at the Higher Level (HL) as only HL courses receive direct post secondary transfer credit Transfer credit for specific institutions can be found by looking up the ‘BC Transfer Guide’ or by checking the IBO website (www.ibo.org)

Diploma Courses Options - HL Courses that can be taken as individual diploma courses for direct credit are as follows: English Literature HL History of Europe HL Psychology HL Biology HL Chemistry HL Visual Arts HL

Diploma Courses Options - SL Some Diploma Courses at the SL Level can be taken as Diploma Courses subjects: Physics SL Sports, Exercise and Health Sciences SL Music SL TOK CAS Extended Essay SL COURSE TAKEN IN THIS MANNER ARE COMPLETED OVER TWO YEARS AND ARE INTENDED AS PREPARATORY WORK OR EARLY EXPOSURE TO POST-SECONDARY CURRICULUM THEY DO NOT EARN DIRECT CREDIT AT THE POST- SECONDARY LEVEL

Potential IB Students – what we want to see Students applying to the IB Diploma Programme (full or Diploma Courses) should demonstrate some the following qualities: Able to communicate well in oral and written work Strong record of consistent attendance Good work habits High level of participation in class Willingness to work outside of school hours on school events An ability to manage time Willingness to seek extra assistance on own time as needed Some involvement in activities outside of school An awareness of and interest in current events both locally and internationally

Application Process Two step procedure: Complete the Common Application Fill out either a full Diploma supplement or a Diploma courses supplement – NOT BOTH All areas of the application must be completed, and only complete applications will be accepted Forms are available at www.seaquamib.com Application deadline is February 6, 2017

Application Process con’t Once an application is downloaded: Please ensure that all parts are complete Please enclose the non-refundable application, IB candidate registration and ManageBac fees of $400 After the application is handed in: Applications will be reviewed An interview time will be given to the student Once the interview is complete, the applications will be reviewed once again and acceptance letters will be generated (prior to Spring Break) All fees are non-refundable once accepted into the program Please pay attention and record relevant fee dates as noted in the application
