6 All IB courses are enhanced and advanced courses Standard courses are at least 150 hours in length Higher level courses are at least 240 hours in length Diploma students need to take 3 HL and 3 SL courses, and 1 course from each group Things to Consider

7 IB Points 3 HL and 3 SL courses IB Grades from 1-7 = maximum 42 points ToK and Extended Essay = 3 points Total point available = 45 points IB DIPLOMA = 24 points (12 higher level)

10 University Credits In addition to scholarships, students may earn University credits by scoring: a 4 or better on most courses (U of M) a 5 or better on any HL courses (U of W)

11 Preparing for University Any diploma combination will fill the requirements for general admission at university. 14 Programs Which Require Specific Courses Pharmacy: Chemistry & Biology Biological Sciences: Biology Chemistry & Physics recommended Physical Sciences: Chemistry Physics Environmental Sciences: Chemistry Physics Biology recommended  For faculties which require or recommend all three sciences, students should take two of them at the IB level and one as a regular High School course.

15 IB Science Course General Information Higher Level (240 hours) Biology, Physics completed over 2 years grade 11 all year, every other day + grade 12 every day until IB exam period (May) for registration – sign up for only 32S

16 IB Science Course General Information Standard Level (150 hours) Chemistry completed over 1 year every day until IB exam period (May) grade 11 & 12 semester 1 and 2 respectively for registration – sign up for both 32S and 42S Chemistry

17 IB Science Course General Information Choosing the science courses should be based on: –Faculty or course of study at the post- secondary level –course pre-requisites at post-secondary level –your interest in the subject area

18 IB Science Course General Information Each course is different and thus provides different challenges Strong student work ethic is the foundation to success in any course There is no science course “easier” than the other

19 IB Science Course General Information Common Characteristics: –same type of IB assessments –Internal Assessment 24 % (Practical, Lab Work) –External Assessment 76 % (Final Exams) –Each 42S/A course is accepted as a University pre-requisite

20 IB Science Course General Information many topics learned in each of the courses are university level topics each course relies on consistent and steady work and study habits each course may earn the student a university credit

21 IB Science Course General Information Unique Characteristics Chemistry 40 hours of lab work, labs done weekly Some math base needed as well as reading and comprehension skills Course requirements are lab reports, content tests and assignments

22 IB Science Course General Information Unique Characteristics Biology covers high school Biology content and University level content requires frequent reading and review plus comprehension skills 60 hours of lab work required
