Doral Academy Preparatory High School is a candidate school* for the Diploma Programme. This school is pursuing authorization as an IB World School. These are schools that share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that Doral Academy Preparatory High School believes is important for our students. Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can the Diploma Programme (DP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted. 3 What is IB? The International Baccalaureate (IB) program is an internationally recognized program that offers students a rigorous and challenging array of courses The aim of IB is to develop internationally minded students who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help create a better and more peaceful world An IB education Centers on learners and how to learn Develops effective approaches to teaching and learning Works within global contexts Explores significant content

4 What is the IB Diploma Programme?
The diploma programme (DP) is a two year program beginning in junior year where students must engage and pass six courses spread across five discipline groups Language and Literature Language Acquisition Individuals and Societies Sciences Mathematics The sixth course can be from the fine arts category or can be another course in any of the previous five categories

Two levels to courses Standard (SL) and Higher (HL) Level Students must take a mix of both levels of courses Students must also complete three core elements Extended essay (EE) Independent research of a question relating to one of the subjects students are studying Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course Course that unifies all the academic disciplines focusing on critical thinking and the nature of knowledge. Creativity, action, service (CAS) project Project that enhances students personal and interpersonal development through experiential learning and journeys of self discovery

Assessments Students take written exams at the end of the course which are graded externally Examinations are usually in May Students must also complete tasks during the course that are graded internally (course instructor) and moderated externally (outside review) Scores for exams range from 1 to 7 points Students must earn at least 24 points and complete the core requirements in order to earn the diploma

7 Benefits to IB College level courses offering both breadth and depth of content Students have the opportunity to earn college credit Criterion based versus norm referenced based International approaches to learning Credits are internationally recognized Diploma program students are actively recruited and preferred by top universities Different high school diploma track Completion of the IB diploma program will earn students a Bright Futures Scholarship

Average acceptance rate of IB students into universities is 22 percentage points higher than the average acceptance rate of the total population Acceptance rates of IB students into Ivy League institutions (Princeton, Yale, Brown, Cornell, Harvard, Columbia, Dartmouth, University of Pennsylvania) is between 3-13 percentage points higher than the average acceptance rate of the total population 1671 universities recognize the IB program and have official policies for accepting IB students. Globally, 80% of Diploma Programme candidates earn the IB diploma

10 IB Statistics and Numbers
Currently 884 IB Diploma Programmes in the United States 111 of which are private institutions In Florida, there are 85 IB Diploma Programmes 12 of which are private institutions In Miami Dade, there are 8 IB Diploma Programmes North Miami, Coral Gables, Coral Reef, Ferguson, South Dade, Miami Beach Gulliver Preparatory and Carrollton of the Sacred Heart are private institutions There are currently no charter schools in Florida offering the IB Diploma Programme

12 Student Process for Applying to IB
Students will fill out and submit an application during their 8th-10th grade years Available on the Doral Academy website under Advanced Academics Qualifications for consideration into the Diploma Programme 3.0 unweighted GPA in core courses No more than 10 absences (excused and unexcused) within the previous school year Current teacher recommendations Strong standardized test scores Applications will be reviewed by an admissions committee and decisions will be given prior to the beginning of the following school year Students are formally inducted into the Doral Academy IB program in their junior year, when they begin to formally take IB courses and examinations

13 Process for Authorization
School must request for candidacy, which is approved by IB Doral Academy was approved last year in late March Once the school is approved, the school will then commence to apply for authorization during the candidacy phase Doral Academy is currently under the authorization phase Policies and procedures are being devised and faculty/staff trained to instruct the courses Once authorized, the school may commence implementing the diploma program Authorization visit sometime in October/November 2016 Final decision comes in April/May 2017
