Information Processing Lesson 2 Information Processing
Objectives Define hardware and software Explain the three basic computer functions: input, processing, and output
Hardware Software Hardware refers to the physical components of a computer that can be seen and touched. Software is a set of instructions or programs that tells the computer what to do. Including: Keyboard Mouse Network cable Webcam Monitor Printers Router Speakers Motherboard DVD drive Two types: System software Application software
System Software Application Software programs that control and analyze the computer’s hardware, for example, an operating system or backup software Application Software Programs that are designed to help users complete a specific activity or task. For example, if you wanted to search the Internet, you would open an application called a web browser. Have students name some application software they use regularly.
Three Basic Computer Functions Input Processing Output Input is when a computer takes in data or information through an input device. Processing is when a computer uses input data or information to obtain a meaningful result. This takes place in its central processing unit or CPU. Output is when a computer sends out data or information through an output device. Examples: Keyboard Screen Mouse Scanner Digital camera Gamepad Examples: Printer Screen Speakers Have students talk about different computer types (phone, tablet, embedded system in car, ATM, etc). Can students identify the input and output devices of these computers?
