Values provide greater aspirations than rules Rules require remembering. Values require thinking. You can ‘bend the rules’. You cant bend values!

Our new school values A reflective approach that uses a the school values as a mirror for decision making. All behaviour – both positive and negative – is addressed through our Values. We want children to compare what they do with the Values of our school. We help children to understand the importance of these values and our expectations.

We celebrate children’s brilliance! Praise with regular reference to School Values Daily Values Star Awards Weekly Values Star of the Week certificates Weekly Star of the Week certificate Always Child raffle each Friday. ‘Class dojo’ reward system – usually linked to learning ‘Glitzy witzy’ stickers Good to be green Lighthouse Identified vulnerable children are supported in/out of class to prevent any further escalation and build confidence in their ability to manage their behaviour and responses. They may have their own Behaviour charts.

Encouraging Responsibility: Cool Down Zone Each class provides an area for children to ‘cool down.’ Breakfast & After School Club, and the playground also have cool down zones. Children can be asked to visit the cool down zone, or visit it independently Staff take the opportunity, one to one, to get the child back on track…

Stage 1 – Warning with reflective questions We don’t punish – we re-educate and nurture. If a child struggles in English or Maths, we offer support. So too, if children break our values We challenge ALL low level disruption – the learning is sacred! We offer a ‘Cool Down’ first if appropriate. Children will never be humiliated. We remove them from their audience / their class. The questioning process is discreet for both (at the periphery). They take responsibility. They do the thinking and the talking! No feeling of injustice or not being listened to! A chance to think and realise what you have done wrong before a Yellow card. Gives an opportunity to plan a fresh start. Adult tells child that they have the opportunity to turn things around... and that they don’t want to have to give them a yellow card (but will do if disruption continues). It shows those who have been harmed that action has taken place.

Examples of reflective questions What has happened? What part did you play in it? What would _______ say had happened? What mistakes did you make? (Don’t ask why?) What could you have done differently? Who was hurt / affected? Which school values have not been followed? What happens when you break our values? What do you want to do now? What can you do to repair the harm? How can you help yourself to improve for next time? Is there anything we can do to help you? What will happen if you disrupt again? 

Yellow and Red Cards Yellow Card for a second break of our school values Sent to the school Reflection Zone to reflect at their next break / lunch / or towards the end of day. Red Card for a third break of our school values, or for swearing, stealing, biting, throwing, or high-level defiance constitutes a Red Card. Sent immediately to Mrs Warwick, Miss Vaughan, Miss Payne or Mrs Fordham. They will call parents / carers. ‘Cool Down’ Questions and Reflection sheet Making up for any lost learning.

Exclusion Internal Exclusions for: Any fighting* or proven bullying over time Still breaking our school values after a Red Card Receiving 2 red cards in a week. A two-week Behaviour Support Programme is written and discussed with parent. External exclusions for: any major disruption of class or serious violation of school values that puts the child or others at risk, for example an assault on a member of staff, an attack on another pupil or causing significant damage to school property.

Behaviour expectations As adults and role-models to our pupils, staff must always model the school values, showing respect and kindness to our pupils. So too should parents! Children are all expected to WALK SILENTLY ON THE LEFT around school. Children are also expected to get changed for PE without talking (in KS1 & KS2) Children taking responsibility through WALK away (to calm down) TALK to the children about the problem TELL an adult Apologies are always expected for mistakes and breaks of the school values. A consistent approach in breakfast/after school club as well as on the playground.
