1 Meet the Teacher September 2017

2 How you can support your child - reading
Reading Champions will be continuing this year. To achieve reading champions each week, your child has to have read at least 3 times per week at home The first week of the school year (4/9/17) will not be counted There are no catch up weeks so if your child wants to achieve the diamond award (35 weeks) they will need to read at least 3 times every school week from 11/9/17 until 20/7/18 School weeks are the only ones that count; holiday weeks will not count although your child will be rewarded with signatures for this extra reading.

3 How you can support your child - reading
If your child is completing lexia/reading plus, 1x session of this per week can count as a reading session. This must be recorded in your child’s reading record. If they can’t complete these at home they can come into school from 8:30am to complete this. Your child’s reading record must be completed correctly e.g. date, book/pages read and signed by the parent/carer to count. The more information you give us the better – tell us what parts of the book you have talked about, or if there was anything your child found tricky. If your child is reading lime or above they are able to read at least 2 times per week on their own and this must be recorded in their reading record. If your child doesn’t complete reading at least 3 times per week they will complete catch up reading one playtime per week so that they don’t fall behind with their reading.

4 How you can support your child - reading
If your child doesn’t complete reading at least 3 times per week they will complete catch up reading one playtime per week so that they don’t fall behind with their reading. Some children may have to complete lexia or reading plus. If they can’t complete these at home they can come into school before school to complete this.

5 How you can support your child – maths
My Maths – homework will be set weekly. If your child cannot complete this at home, they need to attend an after school my maths club. They can also come into school at 8:30am to complete their MyMaths homework. If they don’t complete their MyMaths homework, they will complete a catch up session during a playtime so they don’t fall behind with their learning. TT Rockstars - improving times tables. We really recommend that children use this regularly as times tables knowledge is essential. Children are given signatures for regular usage. Child that gains the most coins in 1 week will be praised in a Friday celebration assembly and gain a whole class reward.

6 How you can support your child – spelling
Each year group has a set of non-negotiable spellings. These are words we expect your child to be able to spell by the end of that school year. These will be stuck in your child’s reading record along with the spelling pattern/rule they are learning. Each spelling rule will be taught for 4 weeks and the children will be tested at the beginning and end of the unit. They will be rewarded for improving their score.

7 Behaviour In KS2, children will be rewarded with raffle tickets and signatures. If a child makes a wrong choice, their name will go on a card – first yellow, second yellow, then red card. If a child’s name is placed on a red card, there will be a text sent home to inform you and they will miss an timed amount of their playtime the following day. We keep a record of the red cards that a child receives. If we notice that your child is regularly being placed on a red card, Mrs Keen will invite you to a meeting to discuss this further.

8 PE Kits/School Uniform
Please ensure that all your child’s items of clothing have their name in them. Your child must come to school in the correct school uniform every day – details of this are on our school website. Children should not wear trainers as they are not school uniform. Every child must have a PE kit in school. This PE kit needs to consist of a white t-shirt and blue/black shorts with black pumps – no football shirts. If your child does not have a PE kit they will not be able to do PE. If your child is unable to take part in PE for a prolonged period of time due to a medical reason they will need a doctors note.

9 Snack and Packed Lunches
Research has shown that a healthy diet and exercise can be extremely beneficial to a child’s learning. We encourage the children to bring healthy snack to school for playtimes as well as a healthy packed lunch and would appreciate your support in this. Please try to ensure that your child has a healthy breakfast before coming to school. For playtime, your child can either bring in snack from home or buy tuck - toast and a drink - at a cost of 35p. If they have snack from home, they do not need to bring money for tuck too. School dinners now cost £2.30.

10 Safeguarding When your child is in school we want to keep them as safe as possible. Due to this we ask all parents and carers to not speak to their child or any other children through the fence. Any messages or belongings must be passed through to the school office. If your child is being collected by another parent or a different family member than usual, you need to let us know this before the end of the school day. We cannot let your child leave with another person without your permission.

11 School website Our school website address is On the website you will find useful information and links to support your child’s learning as well as important information such as term dates, newsletters and the school dinner menus.
