1 NORTHGATE BEHAVIOUR POLICY
2016

2 Why the changes? When we reviewed our existing policy we asked ourselves questions. Did our existing policy reflect the current needs of the school? Was there a consistent approach by all staff to pupil behaviour across all year groups. What were the common behaviours that disrupted other children from learning? What strategies could be put in place that would have immediate impact on low level disruption?

3 Policy Statement Northgate Primary school is committed to providing an education of the highest quality for all pupils We aim to promote positive behaviour We aim to reduce the likelihood of inappropriate behaviour To achieve this our school endeavours to encourage and implement such requirements in an atmosphere of care, concern and respect for all members of our community.

4 Expectations of all members of the school community in context of this policy
Everyone in our school has responsibility for promoting good behaviour by showing courtesy and respect for others. All staff strive to create an encouraging atmosphere, ensuring that all children succeed and are seen to succeed. Children are taught the difference between right & wrong Children are taught the relationship between cause and effect Children are taught they are responsible for their actions.

5 How we manage behaviour in our school.
This is managed in 3 parts 1. Our School Code 2. Positive approach or rewards for following the school rules 3. Understanding the consequences when children do not follow school rules.

6 OUR SCHOOL CODE If we remember the Northgate Code it will make our school a happy place for everyone. Respect each other Listen Share Be polite Let people learn Take care of our school Tell the truth

7 A positive approach Positive reinforcement is a more effective means of influencing a child’s behaviour than negative sanctions. By using positive methods we can help children understand the repercussions of their negative behaviour and steer them to making the right choices for the future. Children work best when they are encouraged and praised. Children are made aware that there are consequences when rules are not followed.

8 How do we do this in our school?
A PSHE (personal, social, health, emotional) curriculum which is broad and balanced and includes how to stay safe. Circle Time A focus on British values ( Tolerance, rules, freedom of speech, democracy) School rules Class rules A system of rewards Themed assemblies.

9 The Reward System Foundation Stage
Celebrating achievements at every opportunity, verbally or written in a child’s learning Journey Stickers Wow moments Sharing their work with friends, teachers, parents and Head teacher Having their work displayed

10 Sun, rainbow, and cloud system in the Foundation Stage
If a child does something really well they can go into the rainbow and receive a rainbow sticker. The parent/carer is informed. If a child breaks a rule from the school code a verbal warning is given by an adult. If a child breaks the rule again, their name is moved to the white cloud. If a child breaks another or same rule and they are in the white cloud their name is put into the rain cloud. The child misses a part of their ‘Sparkle time.’ The parent/carer will be informed at the end of the day if their child has been in the cloud.

11 Rewards KS1 Achievement, effort & kindness badges Head teacher’s award

13 The Traffic Light System KS1 & KS2
Gold star: Every class has a gold star. Children can go into the gold star for exceptional work or behaviour. In KS2 children will receive an extra house point. Green: All children start each day in the green traffic light Yellow: This is for low level disruptive behaviour, e.g., persistent calling out, talking whilst others are talking, etc. Generally behaviours that disrupt the learning of others. Amber: if a child persists with disruptive behaviour (ie already in yellow three times) their name will be put in the amber traffic light. On some occasions for more serious behaviour a child may go straight into amber. For example, a playtime altercation where no one is hurt, breaking school property on purpose. Red: If a child's behaviour is serious enough to be seen by a member of the SLT they will go straight into the red traffic light. For example, deliberate aggressive behaviour, pejorative language, bullying etc.

14 Playtimes & Lunchtimes
During morning & afternoon playtimes there are always 2 members of staff on duty. Playtimes are staggered for KS1 & 2 Lunchtimes are staggered and at least 2 adults in KS2 playground, 2 in KS1, 3 foundation, 3 dining room, 1 first aid.
