This is the second course in an in-depth two year study of formal Algebra. The fundamental operations and their properties are studied. Topics include: linear functions and inequalities, systems of equations, exponents and polynomials, factoring polynomials, rational expressions, radicals and quadratic functions. Problem solving, application, communication and reasoning are emphasized throughout the course. Students in this class will take the Algebra 1 Keystone Exam in May 2017. *A scientific calculator is sufficient for this course. A TI-30XIIS is recommended. A Pencil A Notebook A Calculator* A Positive Attitude The Rules Food/Drink Cell Phones Cell phones (and other electronics, iPods, etc) must be kept in your backpack during class. Students using phones during class will receive a cell phone violation. If you need to check something or access your calendar, you must ask permission. Please feel free to enjoy a beverage during class. Please keep all food away and save it for lunch. Rule #1 – Please Be Respectful to Everyone. Please refer to the CB West website (handbook) for all school rules. Be Here…On Time Independent Practice Students are expected to arrive promptly to class. A student is considered late to class if they are not completely in the room by the time the bell has stopped ringing. If a student is late to class, the school policy will be followed. All school policies regarding unexcused absences will also be followed. Daily Independent Practice is an extremely important component for success in this course. Practice problems will be assigned on most nights. These practice problems are intended to help students identify their strengths and weaknesses when working independently. This nightly practice will be crucial for success on formal assessments for each unit. Although assignments will not often be formally graded, the thorough completion of assignments is an expectation for this course. Assignments may be collected and graded randomly. Second Chance Learning Assessment What’s Next? Second chance learning will be available on unit exams provided the following requirements are met: All homework must be complete for the unit. The student’s notebook must be complete and organized. The student must attend at least 45 minutes of extra help time (before/after school) to review the content for the unit. The retake must occur before/after school and within one week of the return of the original exam. The maximum score for the new exam will be a 70%. Summative Assessments & Tentative Point Values Grading Practices for Algebra 1B: The goal of your grade is to communicate your understanding of and achievement with the content of Algebra 1B, therefore the following grading practices will be followed throughout this course. Assessment & Grading Final Course Grade Marking Period Grades 75% Summative Assessment Category 20% Formative Assessment Category 5% Independent Practice Category 40% Marking Period 3 + 40% Marking Period 4 + 3% Core Assessment 1 + 3% Core Assessment 2 + 14% Multiple Choice Final Exam Formative Assessment Unit Quizzes Typically, each unit will have a unit quiz toward the middle of the unit. As quizzes are primarily a formative assessment tool, there will be an opportunity to improve the quiz score at the end of the unit. If a student demonstrates improvement on the unit exam, the score on the unit quiz will be raised to reflect that improvement. For example, if a student earns an 80% on the Unit 3 Quiz and then a 91% on the Unit 3 Exam, then the grade on the Unit 3 Quiz will be changed to a 91% also. Quizzes must be taken in pencil. Formative Assessment is designed to provide feedback for the student, teacher, and parent. Formative assessment will occur in many graded and non graded ways throughout the course. These assessments may include participation in lessons, question & answer, classwork, homework, graded problem sets, warm ups, exit tickets, reviews, and quizzes. Summative Assessment Unit Exams At the conclusion of each unit of study there will be a summative unit exam. The exam will be an opportunity for the student to demonstrate understanding on the current unit of study as well as cumulative review topics. Exams must be taken in pencil. Summative Assessment is designed to provide a culminating demonstration of learning and to assess mastery of knowledge at the conclusion of the unit or course. Summative Assessments may include unit exams, core assessments, projects, and the multiple choice final exam. Each core assessment involves solving application problems related to the unit. All students need to reach at least proficiency (70%) for successful completion of the course. In the event that a student does not reach proficiency on an assessment, they will be asked to review and retake it. Multiple Choice Final Exam: Students will take a 50 question multiple choice exam as a final summative assessment at the conclusion of the course. Students will be provided with a review packet before the exam.
