skill learning principles ( classifying skill )

Classification & characteristics of skill

Definition : Skill is being able to achieve a particular objective and involves a sequence of movements learned over a period of time. Eg: Tennis serve

Classification of skill : DISCRETE SKILLS : Discrete skills have a distinct beginning and end point. Eg: A football punt

Classification of skill : SERIAL SKILLS : A serial skill is a combination of discrete skills in succession. Eg: A gymnastics routine

Classification of skill : CONTINUOUS SKILLS : Continuous skills have no distinct beginning or end point.

Classification of skill : CONTINUOUS SKILLS : Continuous skills have no distinct beginning or end point. Eg: running, cycling, swimming.

Classification of skill : CLOSED SKILLS : Closed skills are performed in a predictable or stable environment. The timing is controlled by the performer.

Classification of skill : CLOSED SKILLS : Closed skills are performed in a predictable or stable environment. The timing is controlled by the performer. Eg: cricket bowl, tennis serve, softball pitch.

Classification of skill : OPEN SKILLS : Open skills are performed in an unpredictable or changing environment. The timing is influenced by external factors.

Classification of skill : OPEN SKILLS : Open skills are performed in an unpredictable or changing environment. The timing is influenced by external factors. Eg: batting, tennis rally, goal-keeping

Classification of skill : FINE SKILLS : Fine skills involve small muscles or muscle groups where accuracy and precision are required. Eg: darts, lawn bowls, snooker.

Classification of skill : GROSS SKILLS : Gross skills involve large muscle groups or whole body movements.

Classification of skill : GROSS SKILLS : Gross skills involve large muscle groups or whole body movements. Eg: throwing, kicking, hitting.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SKILL : Athletes demonstrating skill will exhibit : * co-ordination * timing * organisation * efficiency * precision of movement * correct decision making * accuracy * consistency * anticipation * quick reactions * etc…..

CHARACTERISTICS OF SKILL : Factors affecting skill level include : * age * gender * hereditary * physical maturation * physical characteristics * physical fitness * effectiveness of the senses * motivation * arousal level * personality & emotions * experience & coaching * role models * environment * socio – economic factors * culture
