1 Skill in Sport

2 Introduction Why do we play sport? Why do we watch sport?
What’s the positives & negatives of live sport and sport on TV? What sports do you watch live, in SA or away?

3 SKILL We learn to perform skills from a very young age
Some are simple (walking) Some are complex (swimming) Proficiency = PRACTICE

4 MAIN CHARACTERISTICS OF A SKILL
Goal Oriented 2. Meeting the performance goal with maximum certainty 3. Meeting the performance goal with minimum outlay of energy 4. Learned through practice

5 SKILL Make a continuum of 3 different skills, explaining how they go from simple to complex.

6 A specific action or the level of performance of an individual
WHAT IS SKILL? A specific action or the level of performance of an individual They are goal orientated – the skill will achieve an end result. Eg: putting a golf ball into the hole. They meet the Performance goal with maximum certainty.

7 WHAT IS SKILL? 3. They meet the performance goal with minimum outlay of energy. Eg: Being streamlined when swimming. 4. They are learned through practice & experience.

8 TYPES OF SKILL MOTOR SKILL: emphasis on movement, not much thinking required. Come up with 5 examples..

9 TYPES OF SKILL COGNITIVE SKILL: requires a lot of thinking. Knowledge of the game & decision making required. Come up with 5 examples..

10 TYPES OF SKILL PERCEPTUAL SKILL: using your senses to assess a situation & help you make decisions. Vision, hearing, touch etc. Come up with 5 examples..

11 TYPES OF SKILL PERCEPTUAL-MOTOR SKILLS: interpretation of environmental stimuli & the motor response to the sensory info. In most sports. Come up with 5 examples..

12 SKILL CLASSIFICATION Read page 109
Define the 3 classifications of skill, and come up with 4 examples for each. (don’t use the examples in the book) Discrete Skills Serial Skills Continuous Skills

13 ENVIRONMENT Read page 110. Define what open and closed skills are. Give an example of 2 open and 2 closed skills (not listed in the text). Classification of skill is related to the precision of the movement. What are gross motor skills? Example? What are fine motor skills? Example? Draw Fig 5.3 and add your own example.

14 SKILL CLASSIFICATION Complete table 5.1 on page 111.
Define & give an example of the following: Individual skills Coactive skills Interactive skills What is the difference between Ability and skill? Explain..

15 Distintivness of movement
1. Discrete skills 2. Serial Skills 3. Continous Skills

16 Discrete Skills Has a clear start and finish
Usually brief and well defined Forward roll in gymnastics Golf swing Penalty stroke in field hockey Each of these skills are clearly defined and it is obvious when the movement starts and stops

17 Serial Skills Involves linking together skills to form a long and complex movement A series of flips and somersaults in gymnastics Triple jump – Hop, skip, jump

18 Continous Skills Where the end of one cycle of movement is the beginning of the next They are repetitive, rhythmical and take place over a long period of tune A distance or set time usually governs the time the skill is performed for Swimming Cycling Running

19 How to classify it? MAGILL (1998) – Suggests 3 skill classification criteria based on: The distinctiveness of the movement characteristics Discrete motor skills, Serial motor skills, Continuous motor skills The stability of the environment Closed motor skills, Open motor skills The size of the musculature involved Fine motor skills, Gross motor skills

20 Interaction Continoum
INTERACTION SKILL DESCRIPTION EXAMPLE Individual Skills that are performed in isolation from others – Only one performer is involved at a particular time Archery High jump Coactive Skills that are performed with someone else, but there is no direct confrontation Sprints Interactive Where other performers are directly involved and can involve confrontation – This is because there is an active opposition and this directly influences the skill Rugby Water polo
