Curriculum Overview Continued Grammar Teach through writing Assessed in daily writing Orton Gillingham for spelling and word patterns Science Units: Forces and Interactions, Life Cycles and Traits, Interdependent Relationships in Ecosystems, Weather and Climate Engineering Design StemScopes online Social Studies Units: Continents, Economics/Government/American Symbols, Population, Natural Disasters, Native Americans, Immigration Geography integrated throughout units

Word Study Word Sort Sort the words by their pattern. Record your sort on loose leaf paper. Sentences Write 10 sentences using as many of the words as you can. Make sure to include words from each pattern. Word Find Find at least 5 more words that follow each of the patterns. Circle the Pattern Write each word and circle the letters that make the pattern. Practice Test Take a practice test at home. Include words that follow the patterns but are not on your list. Discuss any mistakes with your parents. Poem Write a poem using pattern words. Underline each pattern word. Circle the oddballs. Story Write a story that includes at least 10 pattern. Quick Sort Do a quick sort several times. Time yourself. Record your times. Highlight the Pattern Write the words using different colors to highlight the pattern. Students will compare and contrast features in words. The purpose is to gain word knowledge, not to memorize specific words. Students will use their word knowledge to categorize patterns. The students should be able to: Apply the patterns to words Use the words in their writing
