Presentation transcript:

Year 6 SATS Success Thursday 9th March 2017

Changes to the tests The new Primary National Curriculum was introduced in 2014. The tests are based on the key objectives from the new curriculum. Some objectives are considerably more challenging and the tests reflect this.

End of Key Stage 2 Assessment Year 6 Assessment comprises 2 parts: Teacher Assessment Teacher assessments are judgements made against a specific set of criteria, the interim framework. We submit our assessments to the Local Authority for each child on: Reading; Speaking and Listening; Writing; Maths and Science.

End of Key Stage 2 Assessment 2) SATS The SATS are Statutory Assessment Tests. The children have tests in: Reading; Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation Maths

The Tests Reading: One one-hour test consisting of 3 or 4 texts and a corresponding answer booklet. The texts get progressively more challenging. (50 marks) SPaG: One short-answer paper, lasting 45 minutes, testing grammar and punctuation, (50 marks); a separate spelling test, (20 marks).

The Tests Maths: 3 papers Paper 1: Arithmetic, 30 minutes (40 marks) Paper 2: Reasoning 1, 40 minutes (35 marks) Paper 3: Reasoning 2, 40 minutes (35 marks)

2016 SATS The Reading tests changed in 2016; the level of text is significantly more challenging. There is a focus on understanding vocabulary and being very specific with responses. (tenses; use of synonyms etc…) The SPaG test is similar in structure to previous years however content is much more challenging. The Maths test: No Mental Arithmetic CD; instead there is a calculation (arithmetic) paper. The two reasoning papers are to get increasingly more challenging and expect pupils to apply a number of skills to one question.

EXAMPLES-Paper 1 Place value x and ÷ by 10, 100, 1000; rounding Fractions: + - x ÷ Long multiplication and long division Bodmas Four rules with decimals Percentages

Writing Assessment No formal test to be externally marked Attainment is based on Teacher Assessments, which are made on-going throughout the year, across different curriculum areas, against the interim framework criteria. Teacher assessments may be moderated externally.

REPORTING No Levels! Children are reported as being: -Working towards the expected standard “has not met” -Working at the expected standard “has met” -Working at the expected standard in greater depth. Not reported by the test results.

Scaled scores The RAW SCORE (number of marks achieved) will be converted into a SCALED SCORE. The purpose of this is to maintain consistency year on year as there may be slight differences in difficulty of the test; the expected number of marks will always equate to 100 on the scaled score, even if the number of marks required to achieve the expected for that test changes. The expected score will not be decided until the children have sat the tests.

Transition In the Summer Term, Mrs. Stanley and Mrs. Casey meet with the teachers from the Secondary schools the children are moving on to. We give a full picture of each child’s ability, strengths, areas for support, attitude to work and behaviour. We feel this year this is more important than ever, with the descriptors being so broad. We want each child’s strengths to be recognised and for them to receive support where necessary.

What we are doing in school… Giving the children some new-style practice papers so they are familiar with the tests, the layout and the type of questions they will be asked Groups for support have been running since October to target particular needs Giving the children practice at working within time limits Giving the children test strategies i.e. What to do if they can’t answer a question...

What you can do to help Support children with homework Regular reading practice; if preparing for a race you would train to improve speed and skills, so the children will benefit from improving speed and developing ideas in response to books: overall themes etc... Look out for interesting vocabulary when reading and look up meaning or ask child to use new words correctly in a sentence. Check they are quick and accurate with times tables. Look at maths around us: measures; time problems; timetables...calculations…

In SATS week, you can help by… Encouraging them to do their best, without getting worried Make sure they get enough sleep Eat breakfast Come to school with a mid-morning snack (optional) and water bottle
