The West The West The West

Growing Conflict Years following the Civil War there is increasing conflict between Native Americans, settlers and the U.S. Government

Time line of Indian Wars 1862 – Dakota Sioux Uprising over failures to pay annuities to the Sioux 1864 – Sand Creek Massacre over conflicts between Native Americans and settlers 1876 – Battle of Little Bighorn – Last major victory of the Native Americans over the U.S. Army 1877 – Nez Perce – unsuccessful flight to avoid the reservations. Chief Joseph – “I will fight no more forever.” 1890 – Wounded Knee - Last major Native American Conflict

Solutions: Americanization Movement to Reservations: Force Native Americans to move to the Reservations by killing their main food source of the buffalo Poorly funded loss of tribal culture Dawes Act – 1887: Divided reservations into allotments (sections) and encouraged Native Americans to become land owners and encouraged assimilation (to absorb a group into another culture)

Indian Schools Native American children were encouraged to separate from their families and attend school to learn the “white man’s ways” These schools often left the children conflicted about which culture they would belonged The most famous of these schools were the Carlisle School in Pennsylvania https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfRHqWCz3Zw
