Surrendered just short of his destination saying “I will fight no more forever”

The US Government encouraged Native Americans to assimilate to white culture
Assimilate- to become a part of another society or culture

Each Indian family was granted 160 acres of land and would live separate from their tribe
Government was Native Americans to become farmers
Intended to seep up assimilation
