5th GRADE TAKE-HOME PARENT MEETINGS Parent meetings have been held at 21 schools. The remaining 5 schools are conducting parent meetings tonight. Each school has a DVD of the presentation for viewing by parents that were unable to attend the meeting. (Spanish version is also available)

PARENT MEETINGS 1,074 Netbook computers have gone home with students. These netbooks are checked out to students using the district Booktracks system. Students whose parents did not allow them to take home a computer have been assigned one to use in the classroom. 1,565 - 1074 - 491 - 68.63% Students – Out – No or no show - Percentage

5th Grade Teachers Every 5th grade teacher will be receiving a Dell Latitude 5420 laptop. These will be distributed before the winter break. All 5th grade teachers will receive training on January 3rd and February 17th In-service days. The grade leaders from 5th grade will receive a day of training on either January 19th or 20th. January 3rd - Introduction to the netbook and loaded applications Utilization of online resources – ALEX, Thinkfinity, APTPLUS, online textbook components Implementation of the Alabama Course of Study: Technology Education – Resources & Activities January 19th or 20th - Train 5th Grade Leaders - 1 per school on netbook utilization and implementation Edmodo - Secure Social Learning Network for Teachers and Students Grade leaders will provide 6 hours of training to other 5th grade teachers January 17th - Follow-up training

High School Government Mobile Dell laptop lab for each high school will be distributed before winter break. Laptops will be utilized in the online course component required for graduation. A team of 4 Government teachers are finalizing the online Government course component and are piloting this course 2nd semester. Other Government teachers will be trained in April and August.

Mobile MacBook Air Computer Labs Computers utilized for specific courses such as design, art, multimedia, etc. Mobile labs will be distributed through competitive proposals submitted by the high schools in January. Equipment will be distributed to approximately 4-5 high schools. An Apple representative will be providing training to these participating teachers.

iPad Initiative 28 iPads with a managed cart per elementary school. iPads are assigned to grades K-2 to be used in center instruction. 728 iPads will be configured with the appropriate APPs utilizing icloud based technology. Training will be provided to the K-2 teachers. Distribution scheduled by February, 2012.

iPad Cart Wireless Each of the 28 carts will be equipped with a wireless access point. The access point will provide wireless network within 50 feet of the iPad cart. The access point is designed to accommodate 25 – 30 concurrent connections to the Internet.

Student Computers 1,936 Dell Netbooks configured with District specified software On-going technical support will be provided.

Principal Computers iPad 2 provided to 37 principals. Met with the principals to assist in individualizing their iPads. Each principal will receive either a Dell Latitude E5420 Laptop or MacBook Air Computer. 23 Dell Latitudes are configured with the District licensed software with delivery is in progress. 22 MacBook Airs to be delivered in January, 2012.

These 5th grade students from Chapman Elementary are creating organizational folders for Science, Spelling, Grammar and Math. They are working collaboratively, as well as individually, to complete Spelling contracts and take notes in their subject areas. According to the teacher, Karen Conner, these students are much more engaged and involved in their learning through the use of these netbooks.
