PETROL-POWER AND CLIMATE CHANGE Transportation ACTIVITY 1 PETROL-POWER AND CLIMATE CHANGE

Transportation CAR RELIANCE Emissions produced from transport account for 25% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions and 23% of total worldwide CO2 emissions (Committee on Climate Change, 2015; UNECE, 2015) Public attitude could help to address this by using alternative forms of transportation. Although technological advancements have allowed for vehicles that produce lower emissions, changing transportation could help address CO2 emissions.

Transportation ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORT OPTIONS To reduce carbon emissions and safeguard natural resources, changes need to be made to how we use transport. How could this take place? Developments in technology Changing attitudes towards travel

Transportation CHANGING ATTITUDES Car Sharing Reduces the number of cars on the road Reduces individuals’ carbon footprints Walking or cycling short distances Encouraging people to walk or cycle short distances (e.g. 1 mile to shops) can significantly reduce unnecessary carbon emissions Can improve health and wellbeing Cycle to work/school schemes have been set up in many work places/schools/colleges Taking the bus Further developments in green public transport and lower carbon impact means that getting the bus is a more carbon efficient way of travelling than using a car Further schemes to ensure that buses are as low-carbon as possible

Transportation CHANGING ATTITUDES Greener public transport initiatives Initiatives for lower carbon emission buses Development of trams Biofuels Biodegradable and nontoxic Produce less CO2 and air pollution than fossil fuels Existing cars can burn biofuels – no need for a new infrastructure for distribution Large amounts of land for production can have its own implications for CO2 production. Hydrogen Produced from water by electrolysis – any source of electricity is suitable Effective way of storing electricity from renewable sources New infrastructure needed for refuelling facilities

Transportation CHANGING ATTITUDES Electric vehicles Powered by electric motors rather than petrol/diesel engines Batteries can be plugged into an electric power source Slow to charge and have shorter driving range Hybrid vehicles Use a combination of electric motor and petrol/diesel to reduce the amount of fuel used, reducing carbon emissions

Transportation CONCLUSIONS Developing sustainable and carbon-neutral methods of transportation are crucial to the energy crisis and limiting climate change Advances in technology offer alternatives, but a change of behaviour is required by the public. Introduced concepts of sustainable transport and why it is important Identified ways in which their own attitudes towards travel could be altered Identified a number of changes that could be made by the wider community.
