Driving Tools Objectives: As a result of this lesson, students will be able to accomplish the following objectives. Identify and select appropriate driving tools for a given project. Use driving tools correctly and accurately when given a woodworking problem. Read measurements within 1/16”. Transfer measurements to boards for driving purposes. Essential Questions: What are the common driving tools used in the Ag Mechanics lab?

Curved Claw Hammer Used for driving nails. Head comes in different weights, 12, 16, 20 oz. Curved claw works well for pulling nails.

Rip Claw Hammer Used to drive nails. Rip claw end works well for taking wood stuff apart.

Framing Hammers Longer handles and heavier heads, 20, 22, and 24 oz. Used for framing buildings. California framing hammer has an ergonomic design.

Ball Peen and Blacksmith’s Hammers Both hammers are used with metal. Ball peen hammer has a flat end and a round end for riveting. Blacksmith hammers have a 2 lb. head and is used for bending and shaping metal.

Sledge Hammer Used for pounding stakes or posts. Used when a big hammer is needed.

Rawhide, Plastic, and Rubber Mallets Used to pound on chisels and other tools that would be damaged by a metal hammer. Used to tap metal and wood components into place without marking them.

Nail Set Used to countersink finish and casing nails flush or below the surface of wood. Different sized tips for different sized nails.
