What is National Dental Practice-Based Research Network? A nationwide, grassroots effort from practitioners Asks and answers questions important to daily practice Has an impact on the quality of care we deliver Share experiences and expertise Gathers real world evidence Practice-based research connects basic and clinical researchers to community-based practices and patients in the real world where most health care is received. By starting in the community we hope to more expeditiously produce results that are relevant to daily practice. Studies done in academic environments may be rigorous, but are not always relevant to private practice. Our dental practice-based research Network is a group of dental practices joined together to investigate questions in the real world of daily clinical practice to produce real world evidence for the prevention and treatment of oral diseases. Funding for the Network The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, or NIDCR, is part of the National Institutes of Health. They are active in funding research in the dental community to improve patient’s health and have funded our National Dental Practice-Based Research Network. NIDCR initially started three regional networks in 2005. The success lead NIDCR to establish a unified effort—the Network we know today. Updated: 2015-04-01

How It Works So how does it all work? Let’s take a look at a study that’s already been completed… After approval of the complete protocol, the Coordinating Center, Westat, will support you in the development of required study start-up documents, such as the Data Management Plan, Statistical Analysis Plan, Manual of Procedures, and Case Report Forms, using the NIDCR Toolkit templates. Levels of Participation Informational: latest news and study results Limited: questionnaire studies Full: questionnaire studies and in-office research You do not need to be a practitioner to join the Network. Non-practicing individuals such as academic faculty, students, dental assistants/staff, and those in public health or other areas that do not actively see patients are invited and encouraged to join at the informational level. Dentists and hygienists are invited to join at the limited or full level. At the limited level they would participate in surveys or questionnaires, at the full level they would conduct research in their practices. While participating in a study is encouraged—it is not required. You decide if you are interested in participating in a particular study. Updated: 2015-04-01
