WHAT DOES IT MEAN? TO PUT IT SIMPLY, IT MEANS SAVING WATER. IT IS WHERE WE ARE REQUIRED TO MANAGE OUR USAGE OF WATER TO PREVENT LOSS OR WASTE BY USING LESS WATER IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES. THIS WILL THEN HELP IMPROVE THE USE OF WATER RESOURCES TO BENEFIT PEOPLE OR THE ENVIRONMENT.

OUR SOURCE OF WATER

WHY WE MUST CONSERVE WATER?

WE USE WATER EVERYDAY. DID YOU KNOW? AN AVERAGE PERSON IN BRUNEI USES 450 LITRES OF WATER A DAY! THAT EQUALS TO 300 BOTTLES OF A 1.5 LITRES BOTTLE OF WATER! EVEN THOUGH THERE IS A DECREASE USAGE OF WATER IN BRUNEI HOWEVER THE PERCENTAGE OF WATER USE IS STILL HIGHER THAN OTHER ASEAN COUNTRIES!

WHY WE MUST CONSERVE WATER? WATER IS PRECIOUS! “A SHORTAGE OF WATER RESOURCES COULD SPELL INCREASED CONFLICTS IN THE FUTURE… POPULATION GROWTH WILL MAKE THE PROBLEM WORSE. SO WILL CLIMATE CHANGE. AS THE GLOBAL ECONOMY GROWS, SO WILL ITS THIRST. MANY MORE CONFLICTS LIE JUST OVER THE HORIZON.” - BAN KI-MOON, SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS, JANUARY 2008

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF WATER? CROPS WILL DIE AND THIS MAY LEAD TO SHORTAGE OF FOOD NOT ONLY AFFECTING ANIMALS BUT HUMANS TOO. IF THERE IS NOT ENOUGH FOOD FOR THE FARM ANIMALS THEN THERE WILL BE LESS FOOD SOURCE FOR US TOO!

[VIDEO] [VIDEO]

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF WATER? FARMERS WHO LOST THEIR CROPS AND ANIMALS MAY MOVE TO CITIES TO FIND JOBS. THIS LEADS TO AN INCREASE OF WATER USAGE AS POPULATION INCREASED. POLLUTION WILL ALSO INCREASE THROUGH THE GROWTH OF INDUSTRY BECAUSE OF THE INCREASE OF CHEAP LABOR. THE POLLUTED WATER SUPPLY WOULD THEN KILL AQUATIC LIFE, FURTHER REDUCING FOOD SUPPLY. WATER-BORNE DISEASES SUCH AS DIARRHEA WOULD ALSO SPREAD.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF WATER? “THE WARS OF THE NEXT CENTURY WILL BE FOUGHT OVER WATER” - PRESIDENT ISMAIL SERAGELDIN, 1995 IN 2003, IN DARFUR, SUDAN, A CONFLICT OVER DIMINISHING WATER SUPPLY BROKE OUT WHERE 400,000 AFRICANS WERE KILLED. SHORTAGE OF WATER IN AFRICA HAS ALSO STRAINED RELATIONS BETWEEN NEIGHBORING COUNTRIES. A SIMILAR CONFLICT ALSO HAPPENS IN AMERICA FOR 20 YEARS BETWEEN 3 DIFFERENT STATES DUE TO SHORTAGE OF WATER SUPPLY. TRYING TO PROVIDE WATER TO PEOPLE COST A LOT OF MONEY!

WHAT CAN WE DO TO CONSERVE WATER? WE START FROM OURSELVES. EVERYONE MUST WORK TOGETHER TO SPREAD AWARENESS OF THE IMPORTANCE OF SAVING WATER.

WAYS TO CONSERVE WATER WASHING YOUR HANDS Turn off the tap while you lather your hands with soap. BRUSHING YOUR TEETH Turn off the tap while you are brushing your teeth. Use a cup. Collect water in the cup and use the water to rinse your mouth. SHOWERING While you are showering Turn off the tap while you lather yourself with soap or shampoo. Only turn it on when you need to rinse yourself from the soap and shampoo! WASHING DISHES When washing dishes by hand, don’t let the water run. Fill one basin with wash water and the other with rinse water. CHECK FOR LEAKS One drip every second adds up to five gallons per day! Check your faucets and showerheads for leaks. CLEANING OUTDOORS Use a broom instead of a hose to clean patios, sidewalks and driveways, and save water every time. WATERING PLANTS Put water in watering cans/jugs instead of using hose. This way you don’t overuse water. CATCH RAIN WATER Catch rain water in large barrels to reduce use of pipe water. The rain water can be used for cleaning outdoors and watering plants! DON’T PLAY WITH WATER Avoid toys that uses a lot of water or a constant flow of water a home such as water slides/bouncers.

OTHER WAYS TO HELP CONSERVE WATER EDUCATE YOURSELF AND OTHERS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF CONSERVING WATER. PUT UP POSTERS AND NOTICES TO REMIND PEOPLE NOT TO WASTE WATER. MAKE A WATER CONSERVATION DIARY TO KEEP TRACK OF YOUR PROGRESS AT HOME TO SEE HOW MUCH YOU HAVE DONE TO HELP CONSERVE WATER. VIDEO ADVERTISEMENTS PLAYED ON TELEVISION.
