2 Water Scarcity Facts... Did you know?
Around 1.2 billion people, or almost one-fifth of the world's population, live in areas of physical scarcity, and 500 million people are approaching this situation. Another 1.6 billion people, or almost one quarter of the world's population, face economic water shortage. A growing population increases the demand for fresh water. In developing countries, there is a lack of fresh water. Water scarcity comes down to two main points, quality and quantity.

3 How can you make a difference today?
Realizing and understanding water scarcity is a real and important issue happening in the world today is the first step. Learning and applying ways to save water in our lives and taking action will make the world a better place. Make a list of what you can do to save more water on a daily basis.

5 Here are some water saving ideas you can do on a day to day basis to change the world!

6 Saving Water in the Kitchen:
Keep a bottle of drinking water in the refrigerator. This beats the wasteful habit of running tap water to cool it for drinking. Saves 200 to 300 gallons a month. Don't let the faucet run while you clean vegetables. Rinse them in a filled sink or pan. Saves 150 to 250 gallons a month. When washing dishes by hand, use the least amount of detergent possible. This minimizes rinse water needed. Saves 50 to 150 gallons a month.

7 Saving Water in the Bathroom:
Turn off the water while brushing your teeth. Saves three gallons each day. Turn off water in shower when applying shampoo/soap. Only run water when rinsing. Saves 10 gallons a day. Make sure there are no leaks in toilet or sink.

8 Saving Water Outside the House:
Don't water the lawn on windy days. There's too much evaporation. Can waste up to 300 gallons in one watering. Drive your car onto a lawn to wash it. Rinse water can help water the grass. Don’t allow your children to play with the garden hose. Saves 10 gallons a minute. Put a layer of mulch around trees and plants. Chunks of bark, peat moss or gravel slows down evaporation. Saves 750 to 1,500 gallons a month.

9 More Facts about Water Scarcity…
Producing 1 Ib of bread requires 500 gallons of water. Growing cotton for 1 T-shirt requires 256 gallons of water. Producing 1 egg requires over 100 gallons of water. A typical Thanksgiving dinner for 6 needs over 30,000 gallons of water. The daily drinking water requirements per person are 2- 4 liters. However, it takes liters of water to produce a person’s daily food.
