MAXIMIZE YOUR INTERNET PRESENCE ENGAGE THE PUBLIC ATTRACT VOLUNTEERS BOOST DONATIONS Courtesy of the Internet Society RTP Chapter Presented by Lynden Price

BUT I ALREADY HAVE A WEBSITE?

OBJECTIVE Learn how to engage with your target audience, encourage volunteers, and promote donations using well-established and popular social media and web services.

AGENDA  Use the Internet to Engage the Public  Use the Internet to Attract Volunteers  Use the Internet to Boost donations  Putting it all Together - Demo  Q&A

ENGAGE THE PUBLIC Create a website/Facebook/Twitter/YouTube super-combo that will attract the most attention from your target audience.

ENGAGE THE PUBLIC – WEBSITE  As an organization, your website is the foundation of your on-line presence  Your website is your single official source of truth!  Every other social media account that you set up should refer back to your website  All of your social media accounts should be congruent  All of your social media accounts should re-enforce and drive traffic to one another

ENGAGE THE PUBLIC - FACEBOOK  Keep your update frequency high – but only with relevant content  Share images, posts and media related to your cause  Use Facebook to set dates for events and reminders – make sure it matches  Always link back to your website  Engage! – Answer questions, respond to posts, like and follow your volunteers

ENGAGE THE PUBLIC - TWITTER  Use to remind volunteers about scheduled events, livestreams or announcements  Link back to longer posts on your website and on Facebook  Interact live with volunteers to help coordination  Interact live with the audience of your events – collect feedback, sign up volunteers, answer questions, address issues and collect donations!

ENGAGE THE PUBLIC - YOUTUBE  Everyone can use video to promote their non-profit – regardless of topic  People respond to and are motivated by images and music  Annotations and video descriptions should link to other videos and back to your website  Embed your videos into your website and Facebook page for viral sharing  Videos of past events and announcements for upcoming events can give a better feeling for what it will be like for the attendees

ATTRACT VOLUNTEERS Tips and etiquette for social media to keep your volunteers informed and actively organized

ATTRACT VOLUNTEERS - FACEBOOK  Make a gallery of events update it regularly  Tag pictures of current volunteers – give your organization a face  Demonstrate clearly the kinds of activities that volunteers engage in  Let your volunteers and current members share their personal thoughts and stories  Give clear instructions on how to join your organization  People who are actively following, liking and commenting - Ask them to join!

ATTRACT VOLUNTEERS – MEETUP.COM  Cost for a Meetup group is $9.99/month up to 50 members, $14.99/month unlimited  Tagging – you show up in searches and Meetup recommends your group based on new users defined interests  Group calendar and build in group messaging and RSVP

ATTRACT VOLUNTEERS – MEETUP.COM TIPS  Give clear directions and instructions on parking.  Advertise the food  Bring a camera and take lots of pictures – post a few on Meetup and link back to your Facebook gallery  Have them follow you on Facebook and Twitter – and your group should follow them!  Get sponsorships to fund your meetings or collect donations directly

BOOST DONATIONS Use donation services for easy and secure payments from your donors.

BOOST DONATIONS - PAYPAL  Many users currently have PayPal accounts  They host your online checkout (saves you from purchasing a certificate and most e- commerce sites support it)  Live customer support  Ability to accept checks  Limits taking donations to web based (not from your phone at an event)  A credit and background check are required for an account.  You still pay credit card transaction fees Benefits Difficulties

BOOST DONATIONS – SQUAREUP  Easily accept donations on your phone, through your website or in a store location.  To Accept Payments: Requires SSN, US-based bank account, date of birth and US Mailing Address  Does not require credit check or PCI assessment  Credit card fees are included in Square's fees, so you will not incur any charges from credit card companies.

BOOST DONATIONS – SQUAREUP  Application is free to download and SquareUp will send them a magstripe reader for free.  Low fee’s for users 2.75% for magstripe card transactions, chip card transactions, contactless NFC payments, and paid Square Invoices. 3.5% + 15 cents for manually entered transactions 2.9% + 30 cents for Online Store sales  Every card accepted has the same rate, and fees are taken out of the total amount of each transaction, including tax and tip.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER Using your website, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social media accounts to re- enforce one another and drive your message
