The House System Every student and member of staff who attends Sir Thomas Boteler High School is a member of a ‘house’. The houses are made up of all students from Year 7 through to the Year 11. Each student is given a house badge of the house they represent during their time at the school. House badges are part of the STB uniform and must be displayed on the lapel of the blazer of every student. The House system is a long standing tradition that creates competition, promotes good work and behaviour, encourages teamwork, provides opportunities to take on responsibilities and brings everyone in the school together. By being a member of the house family, students and staff are encouraged to show team spirit as all of the houses will thrive on the ethos of “it’s the taking part that counts”.

The House System There are 4 houses at Sir Thomas Boteler: Warburton Ireland Tyldesley Priestley

The history of the houses The house system dates back to when Sir Thomas Boteler High School was a Grammar school. It was then reinvented when the school went to vertical forms. It has now been reinvented so that it supports our new school ethos and culture.

Head of House At the end of the academic year students from Year 10 will be asked to apply for the role of Head of House. One boy and one girl from Year 10 are elected from each house. (Year 11 in the next academic year) To be elected they will write an introduction about their house and why they would like to be Head of House. The role of the Head of House: – is to take responsibility for the leadership and organisation of their house throughout the forthcoming academic year including – leading the House assemblies once every half term – running intra house competitions. – organising and writing articles for the Boteler Bulletin/Transition Times every 2 weeks. – Being present at whole school events and supporting the school. – Attend weekly meetings with AM during lunchtime.

House Captains Each year group will have 4 house captains. 1 from each house.(7 students will lead each house) Students will apply for these roles at the start of each academic school year. Their role will be to support the Head of House in the leadership and organisation of their year group throughout the forthcoming academic year.

House Competitions House competitions will take place every half term. Over the course of the year all subjects will run competitions. The House programme is designed in such a way as to be inclusive and promote opportunities for all the pupils, recognising all strengths. All competitions give the students the opportunity to win house points. House points are added together and the house with the most points at the end of the year wins the overall house competition. Students will form an allegiance to their house and a sense of fun and friendly competition will pervade all the house events.
