What is a Servant Leader? "The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people’s highest priority needs are being served. The best test, and difficult to administer, is: Do those served grow as persons? Do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants? And, what is the effect on the least privileged in society? Will they benefit or at least not be further deprived?" Robert K. Greenleaf

Servant Leadership Is not what you do, as much as it is how you go about doing your work every day. The principal tenet is that it is the duty of a leader to serve followers, his or her key role being to develop, enable, and support team members, helping them fully develop their potential and deliver their best.

Servant Leadership According to his essay, Essentials of Servant Leadership, Greenleaf’s philosophy had its roots from reading a work of fiction in 1958: "The idea of the servant as leader came out of reading Hermann Hesse’s Journey to the East. Hermann HesseHermann Hesse

Servant Leadership A conceptual framework that is helpful for understanding servant leadership is found in the “Ten Characteristics of the Servant- Leader” described by Larry Spears (1998).

THREE INSIGHTS FOR SERVANT LEADERSHIP 1. People contribute to what they’re connected to (“People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care”) 2. You can’t lead what you don’t understand 3. The motive to serve is more fundamental, more powerful, and – ultimately – more conducive to happiness than self-interest
