2 Eskom’s Role Implementing Agent for the Dept of Energy for the electrification of schools and clinics Funding provided by the fiscus through the DoE DoE prioritises schools/clinics to be electrified and provides list to Eskom for planning and execution Schools and Clinics identified and funded by the Provincial Depts of Basic Education and Health are electrified as part of Eskom’s normal processes Database of all schools and clinics is provided by the DoE in conjunction with the relevant Provincial Depts 3km radius used to electrify identified schools using grid means Some schools electrified as part of the household electrification programme

6 Findings of the Eastern Cape oversight visit Machamtsholo Junior Primary School – built with sticks has no electricity A point of supply will be brought to school with the prepayment meter. Wiring of the school will not be done due safety issues. Nkumandeni Clinic – the clinic has a prepayment meter without any provision for petty cash The clinic was done by Dept of Health. The customer has applied for upgrade of the supply to 60A and Eskom is investigating options to upgrade the clinic under electrification. Weltevreden Farm school – the school uses community hall The school could be connected to the farmer’s supply.

7 Findings of the Eastern Cape oversight visit Manzana Sen Secondary School – prefab structure A point of supply will be brought to school with the prepayment meter. Wiring of the school will not be done as it is a prefab structure Manzana Clinic – has a 20 A pre- paid meter. The clinic was electrified as part of the household programme. Plans are underway to upgrade the supply to 60A.
