Center for Homeland Security Reduced numbers of young people choosing a career in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) Decline in student performance in science and mathematics Lack of a coordinated, comprehensive student security clearance process Lack of knowledge of internship programs, fellowships, and training assistance Several reports have revealed that a significant skill gap exists in the workforce along with a need for the development of problem solving skills, basic academic skills, a work ethic, and interpersonal skills.
