6 School Education - education is compulsory for children ages 5 – 16 First stage: infant school ( 2 years ) Second stage: junior schools ( 4 years ) Secondary education: 11 – 16 years old * the national curriculum is defined as the minimum educational requirement for compulsory school ages 5 – 16 years old.

7 Educational System of United Kingdom Basic education 1. Foundation stage – included in the national curriculum which covers children aged 3 – 5 years old. 2. Key stage one – includes children aged 5 – 7 years old and year groups 1 and 2. 3. Key stage two – includes children aged 7 – 11 years old and year groups 3 – 6.

8 Basic Education (cont.) 4. Key stage three – includes children aged 11 – 14 years old and year groups 7 – 9. 5. Key stage four – includes those aged 14 – 16 years old and year groups 10 – 11. 6. Post 16 education – not mandatory

9 Higher education It is provided by three main types of institutions: - universities - colleges - institutions of higher education and art and music colleges

10 University level studies Undergraduate stage - lasts for 3 or 4 years and leads to the award of a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts, Science, or other fields. Master’s Degree/ Master of Philosophy - normal entry requirement for a Master’s degree is a good Bachelor’s degree. Doctor of Philosophy - after usually 3 years of further study beyond the Master’s degree, the candidate may present a thesis for the Doctorate of Philosophy.

11 Non – traditional studies Lifelong higher education - is provided by universities or other institutions of higher education to adults living in the region served by the institutions who do not belong to the regular student body. Foundation Degree programmes - are employment related higher qualifications designed to equip students with work – related skills.

13 * The levels of education in the US are similar to those in other countries. * Students living in the city or state pay less tuition because some taxed money is used to subsidized the tuition. Non – Us residents would pay more since they would not be residents of the city or state where the college/university is located.

14 Structure and organization of basic education Pre – primary education - kindergarten - nursery schools - pre – school programmes - day care centers

15 Structure and organization of basic education Primary education - grades 1 – 7 (ages 6 – 14 y.o) Secondary education - grades 7 – 12 (ages 12 – 18 y.o)

16 2 Sectors of post secondary education Post secondary vocational education and training – is non-degree but can produce some transferable credits under certain circumstances. Higher education – includes studies undertaken in degree-granting institutions for academic credit.

17 University level studies Bachelor’s Degree - designed to take between 4 and 5 years depending on the field of study. Master’s Degree - may be taught with or without thesis and may be awarded in academic or professional fields.

18 University level studies Research Doctorate - requires demonstrated mastery of the chosen subject and the ability to conduct independent original research.

19 Non – traditional studies Distance higher education - delivering education to person whose location is far from the city/state. Lifelong higher education - continuing education structured to lead to certificates, diplomas or degree. Higher education training in industry - form of continuing professional education and is referred to as employer – sponsored training.
