Monarchy Oldest form of government Ruler inherits power from relatives Rule by “Divine Right” or the will of God Some monarchs share power with an elected legislature, known as a “Constitutional Monarchy” – Example: Great Britain – Elected House of Commons with the monarch as a symbolic head of state

Theocracy Government run by religious leaders, claim to be directed by God or divinely blessed No legal separation between church and state Citizens of other faiths are excluded/expelled Rulers are often priests or religious clerks Examples: Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt, Iran

Dictatorship A single person exercises complete control A dictator does not inherit power like a king, but rather seizes it by force, or placed into that role by others Dictators are free to do as they please, citizens have few rights and no legal representation Example: Zimbabwe, some Latin American countries

Republic A government without a king or queen The people choose representatives to make decisions Most republics have some head of state that acts as a figurehead for the government Example: The United States

Totalitarian The government controls all aspects of life There is only one political party and only one labor union Government will either control or prohibit all churches and religious groups Control extends to the police, military, economy and the education system Example: Adolf Hitler’s Germany, Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin

Democracy Government authority based on the will of the people Citizens enjoy basic rights and are allowed to criticize the government freely Direct Democracy-citizens vote directly on issues Representative Democracy-citizens elect representatives to vote on issues
