Agenda Final Project (Thesis) Opportunity to access our PhD Program Join our Alumni Association

Final Project actors Every final project involves at least two kinds of actors: 1)The student, responsible for the content and for all the activities leading to the design and the implementation of the work. The final project can be signed by one or two students, ideally the team should be made by one Italian and one foreign student. 2)The supervisor, a Politecnico di Milano Professor or Assistant Professor, which guarantees for the work being relevant within the scope of Management Engineering and provides the graduation commission with an evaluation. Further possible actors involved: 1)The co-supervisor, a research fellow, a professor or another person supporting the supervisor in the management and the supervision of the final work. 2)The discussant, a Politecnico di Milano Professor or Researcher, not involved in the supervision, selected to review the final work in case it takes the form of a dissertation with discussant.

Final Project typologies Report (approx. 50 pages) – without discussant -Report on empirical activities based on topics learned in the MSc -State-of-the art on a relevant topic, based on literature review and secondary sources Thesis – without discussant -Heavy empirical activity, described within a solid theoretical background, leading to relevant managerial implications and execution (approx pages) -Critical literature review aimed at identyfing possible gaps and a possible research agenda (approx pages) -Case study development – problem description, multimedia files support, teachnig note (approx pages) Dissertation (200 pages max) – with discussant -Development of new knowledge or innovative approaches based on a deep literature review, new interpretation or normative models, detailed research questions and methodology, and an empirical research activity

A premise: What is a PhD 10 The PhD (Philosophiae Doctor, dottorato di ricerca) is the highest academic degree, recognized both in Italy and abroad. In Italy  Around 2% of the population has a PhD PhD is a rather new degree in Italy  It was created in 1980 (D.P.R. 382/80)  The PhD programme of the Department of Management, Economics, and Industrial Engineering (DRIG: Dottorato di ricerca in Ingegneria Gestionale) started in 1994  Among our first PhD students there are Professors Lucia Piscitello, Mariano Corso, Giuliano Noci Historically, PhD programmes prepared students for academic career in the university where they earned their PhD  Today, things have changed as we will discuss later on

Employability of PhDs 12 According to a recent study on the employability of PhDs by ISTAT (data refer to 2014), PhDs have higher employment rates than individuals with just the master degree Considering individuals with a PhD in Industrial and Information Engineering, six years after the graduation  97% of them have a job  In around 90% of the cases, the job is in line with education level  Their median net monthly income is above 1,900 euros  In 16.4% of the cases, they work and live abroad  Mainly in Germany, but also in the United States, UK, Switzerland
