Determining Grade Level in Reading  Students are ON grade level when they can read text at the 3 rd grade level AND respond to comprehension questions both orally AND in writing.  Students are ABOVE grade level when they can read and respond independently in writing to text that is at the 3 rd grade level and higher.  Any student who cannot yet read (decode) AND respond in writing to text at the 3 rd grade level is considered BELOW grade level.  Students are ON grade level when they can read text at the 3 rd grade level AND respond to comprehension questions both orally AND in writing.  Students are ABOVE grade level when they can read and respond independently in writing to text that is at the 3 rd grade level and higher.  Any student who cannot yet read (decode) AND respond in writing to text at the 3 rd grade level is considered BELOW grade level.

Understanding Your Child’s Reading Level and the Grace Period These students…  Cannot yet read 3rd grade level text.  Need to be able to read words at the 3rd grade level --OR--  Can read 3rd grade level text, But do not always show they understand the words they can read. These Students ….  Can read 3rd grade level text.  Can understand most or all of what they read.  Need teacher support to write a response to questions.  Should require less support over time and become more independent as readers. These students ……  Can read 3rd grade text or higher.  Can understand most or all of what they read.  Need no support from the teacher to write a satisfactory response to questions about what they read.  Are working on developing higher level thinking skills while in reading group.
