Skill-Related Fitness Agility Balance Coordination Reaction time Speed

Skill The ability to perform a specific task that is acquired through knowledge and practice Examples of physical skills: –Running –Jumping –Throwing –Catching

Having good skill-related fitness allows you to learn physical skills more easily.

Factors Affecting Skill-Related Fitness

Heredity Heredity relates to the physical characteristics we inherit from our parents. Some people are able to run fast or react quickly because they inherited these traits from their parents. It is possible to improve skill-related fitness by using special training techniques.

Maturation and Age Maturation: hormones affect physical growth and development. Some people mature (physically develop) earlier than others. Teens who mature early perform better on skill-related fitness tests than those who mature later.

Training With the right kind of training, you can improve your skill-related fitness. It takes time and motivation. It requires application of the principle of specificity. –You need to engage in specific training to improve a specific component of fitness.

Self-Assessment of Skill-Related Fitness First step in program planning is determining your needs. Identify your strengths and weaknesses: –Prioritize and set goals. –Choose specific activities for your personal fitness plan.

The Two Most Important Factors That Affect Skill Learning 1.Practice involves repeating a skill many times –All people, regardless of their skill-related fitness, can learn skills with practice. –It takes some people longer than others to learn skills, and some people will be better at performing skills than others. 2.Knowledge –You have to have basic information (knowledge) of how to perform skills and information concerning the best way to practice.

Teamwork and Leadership Teamwork involves team members striving to achieve a common goal through cooperative effort. Leadership involves motivating people in a group to work toward a common goal.

Guidelines for Developing Teamwork and Leadership Skills Learn and accept your role. Sacrifice. Communicate. Be sensitive toward others. Show trust and respect. Make good decisions. Observe. Practice.

Science in Action: Feedback Feedback is information you receive about your performance. Feedback from experts is best. Video feedback is also effective. Focus on one piece of feedback (cue) at a time.
