Teen Violence By: Caitlin Krueger and Taylor Lauscher

Theme Teenage violence is unnecessary and leads to consequences. Our theme says that all teenage violence can be avoided if teens take the time to resolve it. Also, the theme says if teenage violence does happen there will be serious consequences for fighting.

Theme in Romeo and Juliet Unnecessary fighting between Romeo, Tybalt, and Mercutio Fighting has bad outcomes – Death – Banishment Use fighting to solve problems Consequences from fighting and unnecessary fighting “Romeo slew him; he slew Mercutio. Who now the price of his dear blood doth owe?” ( ). – Shows how Romeo, Tybalt and Mercutio were fighting – Shows that consequences happened including death and more consequences are still to come

Weapons “According to a 1990 survey by the national Centers for Disease Control (CDC), one in five high school students carries a weapon at least once a month for self-protection or use in a fight. Knives or razors were the most popular weapons, followed by clubs and then guns. Approximately one out of 20 students said they carry a firearm” (Glazer). – Kids are scared and find the need to protect themselves – Carrying weapons means easy access to them if angry, this leads to teen violence – Characters in Romeo and Juliet carry swords so they can fight whenever angry

( ). – Death was consequence during this time – Banishment also was a consequence “ To handle the worst young offenders, the state plans to open in September a 64-bed privately run facility. Anger “We also hypothesized that even if teenagers learned techniques to control their anger, they may choose not to use them” (Nielsen). – Anger leads to teen violence – Proves that anger is a main cause of teen violence All causes relate to anger – Kids get angry and act on impulse – When kids argue, kids get angry – Causes from other slides trigger anger; anger triggers teen violence

Anger in Romeo and Juilet Paris - "I do defy the conjurations And apprehend thee for a felon here" ( ) Romeo- "Wilt thou provoke me? Then have at thee, boy!" (5.3.70). – This quote shows that Romeo gets angry and right away he wants to fight – This shows that each back then, fighting was the result of anger – If someone gets angry, their first reaction is to fight – This shows anger is the main cause of fighting

American Teenagers Today Teenage violence is a major problem in society today. It was a problem during Shakespeare’s time, and it’s a problem today. Kids get angry and think that fighting is the only solution. They carry all kinds of weapons to school including guns and knives. Most causes of fighting result in anger and therefore means anger is the main cause of violence in society today. Fighting today is still rising and no one knows what to do about it. Teens find it easier and easier to get access to weapons they can use when they are angry. Teen violence is a major issue that still needs a solution.

Thesis Teenage violence is caused by anger or behavior that leads to anger. Consequences for the aggressor are juvenile hall/prison or in some cases death (Shakespeare’s time).
