At a first glance, social networks seem perfect. There’s a social network designed for each aspect of our lives. If we want to connect or keep in touch with family, friends, relatives or acquaintances, we can use a variety of social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Whatsapp etc. We can see pictures of them, chat with them or even see them if we have a webcam. Another use of social networks is that of meeting new people who share the same interests as we do. For example, on forums people can discuss a particular topic they’re interested in such as a movie, book or field of study. Reddit is an example of a social network that allows people to interact, open discussion topics and share ideas.

While most social networks are used by their users for fun or making new friends, there’s a special category of social networks which are business- oriented. An example of such a network would be LinkedIn, which is mainly used for professional networking. LinkedIn sells access to information about its users to recruiters and sales professionals, helping the former get a job.

The power of social networks derives from all the things they have to offer that make our lives easier and more enjoyable. We can become so involved in their virtual reality that we forget the real world and slowly and steadily we become addicted to using social networks. Many of them claim to be free, but we don’t realize we actually pay for them with time from our lives. The more users a social network has and the more time they spend on it, the more powerful said social network becomes.

In the end, it is up to each of us how and why we use social networks, but it is important to be able to realize when we have a problem and ask for help. Social networks can be a lot of fun, but they also have disadvantages. Responsible use and a reasonable time amount spent on social networks will minimize the risk of becoming addicted to using them.
