“RIGHTS FOR ALL CALIFORNIANS” Lesson 2, Chapter 10 By Sophia, Audrey, Kylie

‘’Rights for All Californians’’ Not all people enjoyed the same opportunities. Californians fought for fair housing laws. Sylvia Mendez- Mexican Americans- parents sued white school and won.

“Rights for All Californians” Martin Luther King, Jr. was a leader of the Civil Rights movement. Sylvia Mendez was the daughter of two parents who sued a white school district that wouldn’t let their Mexican American daughter in. Jackie Robinson was the first African American to play in major league baseball. Dolores Huerta formed a labor union in Yvonne Brathwaite Burke was the first African American woman to be elected to the United States House of Representatives. Dalip Singh Saund became the first Sikh immigrant from India, he worked to change the law. In 1956 Saund became the first Asian American member of congress. Cesar Chavez led a strike of grape pickers in the Central Valley town called Delano.

‘’Rights for All Californians’’ Answers: 1.They were fighting for equal rights. 2.It was important to leaders that protests were peaceful because they didn’t want to start violence or cause fighting. 3. California changed as groups worked to secure equal rights because the groups protesting had more rights and freedom. 4. California’s school system changed in the 1940’s because more children with different races and cultures could attend California’s public schools. 5. Cesar Chavez helped improve the lives of farm workers because the farm workers got more freedom.
