5 Cesar Chavez This historical figure is Cesar Chavez. Cesar Estrada Chavez was born March 31, 1927 near Yuma, Arizona Chavez began school at age 7, but he found it difficult because his family spoke only Spanish. When his father died, Chavez and his family packed their belongings and headed to California in search of work.

6 Once Chavez completed the eighth grade, he quit school and worked full-time in the vineyards In 1944, he was arrested for breaking a "whites only" rule in a movie theater. He joined the Navy and fought in World War II. Cesar became a labor leader and co-founded the United Farm Workers with Dolores Huerta

7 He helped Mexican Americans become U.S. citizens, sign up to vote, and taught them about their rights. The UFW fought for higher wages for grape-pickers that led a strike and asked the U.S. to boycott California grapes. This lasted 5 years and was a success. The grape growers signed an agreement with the UFW to give workers better pay and living conditions. The UFW continues to lead boycotts, strikes, marches, and even fastened to improve the rights for farm workers.
