2 Section 1: Latinos and Native Americans Seek Equality
1960s Latino population grows from 3 million to 9 million. Mexican-Americans largest group, mostly in Southwest and California. Many Latinos encounter prejudice and discrimination in jobs.

3 The Farm Worker Movement:
Cesar Chavez: Non-violent, labor union leader, forms United Farm Workers Organizing Committee (UFWOC) 1965 Grape growers not recognize union, Chavez sets up grape boycott. Chavez went on 3-week fast, lost 35 lbs. 1970, new contract signed between grape growers and the UFWOC. Union workers guaranteed higher wages and benefits.

4 Native Americans Struggle for Equality:
Native American issues: unemployment, health, and assimilation. Discontent led to the growth of the American Indian Movement (AIM). Militant Native American rights organization. 1972 AIM march in D.C.; protest treaty violations, restoration of lands.

5 Section 3 Culture and Counterculture
Counterculture- white, middle-class youths reject traditional America. Members were called hippies. Hippies feel society and its materialism, technology, and war is meaningless. Promote peace, love, and harmony. Decline of Movement: mystique of 60’s wore off, drug abuse, mental breakdowns.

6 Cont… Rock Music: The Beatles most influential rock band, helped make rock mainstream. 1969 Woodstock Festival gathers many of most popular bands. Over 400,000 attend. Represents 60’s movement of peace and love.

7 Conservatives Attack the Counterculture:
Conservatives alarmed at violence on campuses, cities. Call it “revolutionary terrorism”
