Martin Luther Martin Luther was a monk who disagreed with church practices, especially selling indulgences He said that people could reach salvation through their inner faith in God, not by their actions Luther protested by posting 95 theses (statements) on a church door--a list of reasons why he hated indulgences Church officials quickly got word of this protest and weren’t happy

Lutheranism Martin Luther said that popes and priests were not more important than regular church goers Luther used the printing press to attack church practices He was excommunicated from the Catholic church Diet of Worms—special meeting where Charles V (Holy Roman Emperor) said that Luther was an outlaw and could no longer publish his writings

The Counter-Reformation Attempt to stop the spread of Protestantism Pope Paul III and the Inquisition—find heretics and burn them at the stake Index of Forbidden Books— Catholics couldn’t read books contained in this list that go against morals and faith

Council of Trent Called by Pope Paul III in 1545 Goals: To end abuses of indulgences and tighten church discipline Said that God granted forgiveness only through the church—ceremonies and priests are important Salvation comes from individual faith and ceremonial church actions
