Question: What were the problems and issues that provoked religious reforms in Western Christianity?

Catholic Church Hierarchy Pope Cardinal Archbishop Bishop Monsignor Priest

The Pope’s View on Usury

The Merchant’s View on Usury Interest Payments

Conflicts that challenged the authority of the Church in Rome Tithes:  Catholics had to pay 1/10 th of their annual income to the Church.  Money was supposed to be spent on keeping local churches running (keeping priests and nuns fed, making sure buildings didn’t fall down, etc.).  Money often went to fund extravagant new cathedrals (the Sistine Chapel for example).

The Church’s great political power and wealth caused conflict. All priests (which the Pope is) are supposed to take vows of poverty and chastity. Instead, Pope Alexander VI and Pope Julius II tried to make money off of tithes and land speculation. After them, Popes became large land holders, signed treaties with other kings, and fought wars. As they see this mismanagement of their money, lords and merchants get tired of paying their tithes.

Corruption in the Church German, French and English nobility disliked Italian domination of the Church. It was not unusual for kings to have a great influence over who was elected Pope. The Great Western Schism (1378 – 1417) Which one was in charge?

Pope Alexander VI (1492 to 1503) Had a mistress Fathered 4 illegitimate children Made one of his sons a Cardinal Was made Pope by the King and Queen of Spain, not the council of Cardinals.

Johann Tetzel. Indulgences  An indulgence, Translation: With the Authority of all Saints and with mercy for you, I free you of all sins and crimes and excuse you from all punishments for ten days –
