Objectives: What was the Opium War? What was the Boxer Rebellion and where did they get the name? Describe what is meant by Spheres of Influence. Explain the “open door policy”

1. Britain and China had unfavorable trade balance….so Britain started sending Opium from India, but it was illegal there. 2. China asked them to stop & blockaded Port; British respond with force = Opium War British win

3. Chinese agreements: – Open 5 ports to British trade – Limit taxes on imported British goods – Pay for war – Give Hong Kong island to British

4. Europeans lived in own sections under own country’s laws = extraterritoriality What did British do to adjust trade unbalance with China? Tai Ping Rebellion – Peasant revolt for social reform – After 14 yrs Western powers too much; Treaty opened new ports to foreign trade…
