SSWH14d Examine the interaction of China and Japan with westerners; include the Opium War, the Taiping Rebellion, and Commodore Perry

2 Opium War To make trade with China more profitable, the British introduced the opium trade. Opium use skyrocketed and when the British refused to stop the Chinese government tried to enforce a blockade. As a result, the British started the Opium Wars

3 Opium War The Chinese were forced to make peace and open up ports to the British They also gave Hong Kong to the British This marked the beginning of a period of strong western influence in China

5 Tai Ping rebellion Peasant revolt caused by the Chinese governments’ failure to deal with internal problems and economic hardships (they were also dealing with external issues, like the Opium War)

6 Tai Ping Rebellion Led by Hong Xiuquan
Wanted social reforms such as giving all land to peasants (collective) and equality for women He also banned alcohol, tobacco and footbinding

7 Tai Ping Rebellion The peasant revolt was ultimately put down with the help of European forces BUT as many as 20 million people died during the 14 year civil war.
