War Erupts Leading to Life in the Army As the South Secedes and conflicts between the North and the South begin, Union and Confederate Soldiers begin to Endure many Hardships

Key Terms and Key Figures Key Terms  Fort Sumter  Border State  King Cotton  Anaconda Plan  Blockade  First Battle of Bull Run  Hygiene  Rifle  Minie Ball  Ironclad Key People  Robert E. Lee

Where were you at 4:30am??  After the Succession of the South the Union Tried to Hold on to Fort Sumter  As Lincoln tried to Resupply Fort Sumter, the Confederacy decided to attack the supply ships and weaken the Union  When the South Fired shots at the supply ships the WAR had begun

Like Rats off a sinking Chip!  As Lincoln called out the Militia to attack the Confederacy, four more states would join the Confederacy  As more states joined the confederacy, their citizens would begin to join the Army  When Virginia Joined the Confederacy, Robert E. Lee Joined the Confederate Army though he disagreed with their Beliefs

If at FIRST you don’t secede….  After Virginia joined the Confederacy, the Border States became more important to the Union  Lincoln Kept Maryland by arresting secessionists, protecting Washington DC  After a Confederate invasion Kentucky stayed in the Union providing important waterways  Missouri and Delaware stayed with the Union as West Virginia broke away from Virginia and joined the Union

Strengths and Weaknesses NORTH  More Soldiers (22 Million)  More Factories (85%)  Double the Railroad Mileage  Better Navy  Abraham Lincoln as Leader South  Less Soldiers (9 Million)  Better Generals  Defensive War  Longer Supply Lines for the North  More to Fight For

Here’s what we gonna do! Northern Strategy  Under the Anaconda Plan the Union wanted to kill the Southern Economy  By Capturing the Mississippi river and forming a Blockade, the Union hoped to split the south  The Plan would take time to work, and Lincoln ordered an invasion of Virginia Southern Strategy  The South fought a defensive war hoping to tire out the North  The South wanted to use King Cotton to gain European Support but Europe stayed out of the war  The South would soon look to take the offensive side of the war to wreck the North

Southern Hospitality  Looking to take Richmond Virginia, Union forces attacked Manassas at the First Battle of Bull Run  Led By Stonewall Jackson, the south held off the North until more troops arrived and battled back the North under a rebel yell  The South would win the First Battle of Bull Run and force the North to call in a 500,000 man army

A Tale of TWO soldiers  Most Civil War Soldiers were farmers between years old  Immigrants would serve, mostly in the North, and Africans would join the war for the north in time and Native Americans would join the war for both sides  As soldiers joined the war voluntarily, the North began to double up the South in troop numbers

In the Army Now  After Enlisting in the Army soldiers would move to camps for basic training to prepare for the war  Soldiers Would receive their uniforms. Which did not fit and were in poor quality  The North had inferior supplies due to greedy contractors and the south would not share supplies leading to troops without proper uniforms  During training Soldiers were well fed, but as they joined the war the supplies would become limited

It’s a Hard Knock Life for Us**  Civil War Soldiers faced harsh conditions outdoors and horrible living shelters during the war  Soldiers often could not bathe so they became dirty and infested with lice and fleas  Poor hygiene led to disease and sickness  Poor medical care also led to the spread of sickness, amputation, and death

High Tech War  Rifles with Minie Balls made war more deadly as guns shot farther and Faster making defense easier  Ironclad Ships would replace Wooden ships as the Virginia would battle the Monitor to a tie
