Cope Middle School Open House Mrs. Gabrielle Faulkner-Milligan 7 th Grade English 7 th Grade Honors English Journalism

Who is Mrs. Faulkner-Milligan? 24 years teaching experience. I have taught Regular and Honors Middle School English for 13 years. I am a graduate of Azusa Pacific University and the University of Redlands. I have lived in Redlands since 1994.

My Goals Are… to instill in each student an appreciation of the English language, to teach the Common Core Standards and prepare students for the Smarter Balanced Exam, to help students comprehend different types of text, AND to teach students how to synthesize information by comparing texts AND to teach students how to write about their thinking.

Typical Daily Classroom Activities Opener – Daily Language or Skill Review New Vocabulary (Monday) Read Selection (Tuesdays – Thursdays)  Discussion  Text Based Questions Grade Close Reader Homework (Thursday) Quiz (Friday) Performance Tasks (End of Each Collections Unit)

Performance Tasks – End of the Unit Culminating Activities Module 1 – Expository Essay Module 2 – Narrative Essay (Story) Module 3 – Poetry Analysis Module 4 – Persuasive Speech Module 5 – Multimedia Presentation

Expectations and Procedures Expectations:  Class starts when the bell rings  Stay on task  Ask questions  Show respect Procedures:  Vary from day to day but always involves work, respect, and learning. Students need to be prepared for class each day.  Students need paper, a pencil, a correcting pen, their binder, completed work, and a reading book daily.

Managing Student Work  Homework is given on Monday for the entire week.  Assignments are posted on website and recorded on a calendar in class.  Late work will not be accepted.  Student will be given 4 passes for late work each semester (good for turning in work one day late only).  Absent Work – student have as many days as they are absent to make up work/take tests.  Grades updated on Parent Portal every 2-3 weeks.  Citizenship grade based on participation as well as behavior.
