NOTES: THE CIRCULATORY AND RESPIRATORY SYSTEMS What are the functions of the circulatory system? Summarize the path of blood through the heart. What is blood made of? What is the function of the respiratory system? Summarize the process that causes us to breathe.

THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM  Functions 1.Carry nutrients to cells. 2.Carry waste products away from cells. 3.Carry disease-fighting cells and hormones.

PICTURE OF HEART

COMPONENTS OF BLOOD: 1.plasma – the liquid part of the blood, it is 90% water and contains proteins. 2.red blood cells – made mostly of the iron-containing protein called hemoglobin, red blood cells carry oxygen. 3.white blood cells – cells that fight disease. 4.platelets – fragments of cells that help to form clots.

THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM Function : the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

PICTURE OF LUNGS/ ALVEOLI

BOYLE’S LAW A decrease in volume results in an increase in pressure and an increase in volume results in a decrease in pressure. Diaphragm - a wall of muscle that contracts (inhale) and relaxes (exhale). There is NO muscle in your lungs!

VOCABULARY osmosis the movement of water across a cell membrane. The water moves because of a difference in solute concentrations on the two sides of the membrane.

VOCABULARY diffusion the process by which molecules spread from areas of high concentration to areas of low concentration.

breathing The movement of air into and out of the lungs.

respiration The process in which oxygen and glucose undergo a chemical reaction inside cells to produce energy. C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2  6CO 2 + 6H 2 O
