BY: EMILY, CALLI, AND KALINA The Human Body Quest: The Circulatory System
2
The Function of the Circulatory System Carries oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. The blood carries the oxygen to the body cells Blood then carries carbon dioxide and wastes away or out of the body
4
RED BLOOD CELLS: DISK- SHAPED CELLS THAT HAVE NO NUCLEI; CONTAIN HEMOGLOBIN THAT CARRIES O2 AND CO2 INTO AND OUT OF THE BODY WHITE BLOOD CELLS: THEY FIGHT BACTERIA, VIRUSES, AND OTHER INVADERS OF THE BODY. PLATELETS: IRREGULARLY SHAPED BLOOD CELLS THAT HELP CLOT THE BLOOD PLASMA: THE LIQUID PART IN BLOOD, LIKE WATER, THAT CARRIES NUTRIENTS AND O2 TO THE BODY CELLS AND CARRY WASTES AND CO2 AWAY FORM THE BODY CELLS. The Components of Blood
5
The Path of Blood 1.Oxygen is contained in your lungs 2.Hemoglobin in the red blood cells carry oxygen out of lungs 3.Red blood cells release oxygen to body cells 4.Hemoglobin then catches carbon dioxide 5.Travels back to lungs with CO2 6.Carbon dioxide released out into the air
6
THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM RELEASES OXYGEN TO THE CIRCULATORY TO GIVE TO OTHER SYSTEMS THE CIRCULATORY ALSO SENDS BACK THE CO2 NOT CONTAINED IN CYTOPLASM OR PLASMA BACK TO THE LUNGS AND OUT OF THE BODY THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM HELPS CLEANSE THE LIVER, THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM, BY CARRYING WASTE AWAY Working With Others
7
Fun Facts 1.The walls of the capillaries are only one cell thick 2.If blood flows back toward a vein, the pressure of the blood against the valves causes the vein to close. 3.Arteries are made of three tissue, connective, smooth, and elastic tissue. It also consists of a smooth lining. 4.Some veins are blue.
