2 CIRCULATORY SYSTEM Blood is a tissue made up of fluid, cells, and parts of cells.

3 CIRCULATORY SYSTEM Blood Make Up:
Red blood cells (erythrocytes): carry oxygen to all the tissues from the lungs White blood cells (leukocytes): Fight disease. Platelets: Used in blood clotting Plasma: Liquid part of blood; makes up 55% of blood

4 CIRCULATORY SYSTEM 3 types of blood vessels:
Arteries: Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart Veins: Carry deoxygenated blood to the heart Capillaries: Microscopic vessels where oxygen and nutrients diffuse out and carbon dioxide and waste diffuse in.

5 THE HEART Mammals have a 4 chambered heart atria- 2 upper chambers
ventricles: 2 lower chambers

6 THE HEART Path of blood through the heart
Blood enters through the atria RA (Right atria) gets deoxygenated blood from body LA (Left atria) gets oxygenated blood from lungs When full, atria contract, pushing blood into ventricles.

7 THE HEART Path of blood through the heart
RV (Right Ventricle) contracts sending deoxygenated blood to lungs through the pulmonary artery. LV (Left Ventricle) contracts sending oxygenated blood to the aorta to the body.

9 THE HEART Pulse: surge of blood thru an artery or the throbbing of an artery in any place that allows for an artery to be compressed against a bone, such as at the neck, at the wrist, behind the knee, on the inside of the elbow, and near the ankle joint. Blood pressure: Force blood exerts on the vessels.

10 RESPIRATION Respiration system is made up of: a pair
of lungs, passageways into your body, and a diaphragm. Respiration- All of the processes involved in getting oxygen to your cells and getting rid of carbon dioxide.

11 RESPIRATION Steps of Respiration 1. air to nose
2. through pharynx (throat) 3. through larynx (voice box) 4. down trachea (windpipe) 5. into bronchi 6. into bronchioles 7. into alveoli (sacs in the lungs where O2 and CO2 are exchanged) 8. into blood cells/capillaries 9. to body cells through arteries

13 RESPIRATION When you inhale, the rib muscles and diaphragm contract, pulling air into the lungs. When you exhale, rib muscles and diaphragm relax, pushing air out of the lungs.
