Vacation Bible School Kitchen Helper Training

You are a Kitchen Helper Kitchen is a place where kids eat yummy snacks that reinforce the Bible point of the day. We are so excited that you are here! Please continue through the training to see what adventures VBS will hold this year…

What is a Kitchen Helper? A friend and a helper Someone who is organized Someone who can follow directions Someone who can anticipate needs Someone who likes to prepare snacks Someone who likes to serve snacks Someone who loves and encourages kids

What do I wear? Shorts of respectable length, Capris, or Pants (the kitchen gets quite warm) Comfortable Shoes VBS T-shirt- can be picked up prior to VBS or it will be in the kitchen on Monday morning and MUST be worn everyday Station Leader Nametag- found in station envelope

Where do I start? Arrive on time 8:30 on Monday 8:45 on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday You will report directly to the kitchen in the fellowship hall and check-in with Susan Boddy (Kitchen Station Leader) Change into VBS t-shirt (Allow extra time)

Daily Materials In the kitchen you will find a station envelope. It will remain in your room throughout the day. This will contain nametag labels for the station leaders for each day. As well as a…

Daily Schedule (example) Review the Crew and Grade Level- this will help determine how much assistance they’ll need There are 2 separate groups coming at 10:15 Opening and Closing should be used as Break Times for prep and clean-up

Allergy Tracking This is the Allergy Tracking Form It lists the child’s name, crew, and food allergy. This will be cross checked with the letter on the following page.

Allergy Tracking (cont.) Each child with food allergies will have one of these letters completed by a parent. This will be cross checked with the list on the previous slide prior to VBS, if possible. Susan Boddy- the kitchen lead will provide a spreadsheet noting all allergies and alternate snacks. She will designate someone to check that daily.

What do I do? On a daily basis, you will be… Preparing, pouring, and serving drinks Preparing and serving snacks Setting and resetting tables between groups Tracking children with allergies Preparing ice packs for bumps and bruises Cleaning up the kitchen and snack area at the close of each day

Day One - Maze Mix Description Snack mix made of mini pretzels, goldfish crackers, mini marshmallows, and chocolate rocks. Alternate Snack Swedish Fish will be substituted for chocolate rocks for those with nut allergies.

Day Two - Walking on the Water Description A cup of blue-raspberry Jello with a Teddy Graham cracker to represent Jesus. A boat made of a clementine slice, toothpick, and paper sail will “float” nearby. Alternate Snack Grapes and Teddy Graham crackers.

Day Three – Cave Lizard Description A lizard-shaped treat made of strawberry and banana slices. Legs made of fruit leather. Candy eyes. Alternate Snack Use grapes and apple pieces to create a lizard shape.

Day Four – Jesus Gives Us Love Description A heart-shaped sugar cookie. Alternate Snack Rold Gold Pretzels and Swedish Fish.

Day Five – Pudding Bat Description A pudding cup decorated as a bat. Alternate Snack TBD

When it’s time to say Good-bye Your last group of children will leave to go to the closing at 11:30. Use this time to clean up and prepare for the next day. Susan will instruct you on what needs to be done. Have a fantastic day!!!

Picture Policy Please refrain from taking and/or posting pictures of any children attending VBS, other than your own. If a child has “No Pictures – Media” on his or her nametag, please remove him/her if a newspaper, etc. approaches your crew. If a child has “No Pictures!” on his or her nametag, they are not to be in ANY pictures. Please let the VBS photographer know when he/she approaches your crew.

Safe Sanctuary Never be alone with a child. Always stay in a group of 3 or in line of sight of other adults if you have to talk to a child separately. If you suspect that a child in your care is being abused, please immediately bring this to the attention of one of the VBS Directors or one of the Pastors. Appropriate touch: Please let the child initiate hugs. Open Classrooms/Bathrooms: When taking children to the bathroom, keep the main door to the bathrooms open and stand in the hall to wait.

Thanks for joining us!
